Just daydreaming...
I have a mildly built 460 that was going into a Torino, unfortunately the Torino body is toasted...burnt in a fire. I also have a 2004 f150 Heritage 4x4 with a motor that's gone south, but the trans and t-case are fine. What problems do I need to address to marry the two? Adapter plate possible? Will I need a stand alone computer for the trans? How about lights and peripheal systems? What about if I keep it strictly off-road? Perhaps it's better to go to a standard trans and if so which is best for fast shifting [because race truck!] ?

What engine and trans is in the 2004?

4R70W was used until 2004, and wouldn't last long with 460 power
4R75W or E was stronger, rated to 550ft/lb, is was used starting in 2003

If 4R70W then might be worth more to trade it or sell it with transfer case to get older non-computer controlled auto trans, C6.

Assuming 460 is old school, carb and distributor.

Would the vin # give trans type? Door sticker? Other easy way to distinguish the two?
The 460 is carbed, tho I wouldn't mind efi. But unless I pick up the efi free it won't happen.
What about aod or aode, strong enough stock? Or did they even come behind the lima?
I have a 2wd c-6, what about a divorced t-case, pro/con?

it is a 2003(title of post) or 2004 (first post)?

75w is beefier inside so not sure on visual difference, would have more splines on tail shaft but can really see that.

4.6l would likely have the 70w
5.4l the 75w

Over drive tranny would be fine but thought you were talking more off roading or racing
AOD are strong
AODE(E4OD) needs controller

OD is just one more thing to break, lol, so if you won't use it why bother.
And if you go with big tires that .75 ratio really lowers RPM

I think both 70w and 75w used trans code U on door sticker

It's a 2004 f150 Heritage, I posted as a 2003 because it took me a while to figure out that the 2004 Heritage was [basically] the left-over 2003 trucks and thought others may not know either.

I'm daydreaming, so would like to have the truck both road legal and capable of being my work truck [towing tool trailer] and racing in the series I have my racetruck in [stockish class]. I was thinking of OD so I could run some deep gears and still survive the freeway.

The more cost effective solution would probably be to buy a 5.4 and swap it in. I've heard of one person running a 5.4 on the 4.6 eec. Not sure if the trans bolts up but was thinking it would? This is probably the route I will take as it's probably less work and money in the long run.

It would probably be easier/cheaper to stay mod motor.

And you would have the 4R70W no matter what. Some heavy 5.4 trucks got the 4R100, non issue with your 4.6. Trans will interchange regardless... dunno about the electronics side of it.

Stay as close to your year as possible, get towards '99 and things get different (like what is where in the intake) Windsor vs Romeo can get weird too. If you need pics of a 5.4 I dd an '02 F-150 with one.

Or you could find a Navigator with a 5.4 4V...

This thread has some 4.6l and 5.4l HP and torque listings: http://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/855423-154-hp-5-4l.html

And the years and vehicles that they came in

Yes, the 4.6l(1993 and up) and 5.4l have same bell housing pattern, the 6.2l as well, 411HP :)

I think the 3-valve models(4.6l and 5.4l) had the spark plug issue where spark plugs would break when removed leaving lower half stuck in the head.
2-valve would get stripped spark plug threads

4-valve are crazy expensive, lol.

If you were going to sell it then I might go with OEM 4.6l or 5.4l

I like the daydream of the 460 :)
I guess the E4OD trans would best choice then, they were used with 460(7.5l) engines and in 4x4s, late '80's thru mid-'90's
Would need a trans controller, although if you found a rolled or damaged F-250/350 EFI 460 4x4 auto you may be able to convert yours to EFI.

Looks like the dash in the 2004 needs computer interface, oil pressure(switch), volt meter and fuel level are still analog, direct wire to senders.
Temp gauge, tach, speedo, are computer driven

There was a guy in Oklahoma that was putting a 460 in that body style F150 crew cab.

You know a V10 isn't much longer than a 4.6/5.4...

IF I had a 2003 F150 and was considering engine swaps I'd gravitate to other modular engines... and probably the 6.8 would find itself at the top of my list...

Similar engines with similar management systems make things easier...

a 460 in a 2003 would not ever occour to me because of it's weight...
