I will have to pass on this one...but I just saw a map of where it would be visible from but didn't enlarge it enough to see what I will see...

Going to have to review it in the morning because my fridge just stopped fridging...

In theory, theory and practice are the same. In practice, they are different.
According to the map, I'm going to have prime viewing right in my own yard if the weather is good.

I've begged a vacation day and ordered a solar filter and 2x teleconverter for my 400mm lens. I'm hoping to get some cool photos.

not sure if I can make it, it's about a 7 hour drive for me.
I did buy some #14 welding lenses though, several sites say they are good enough.
stacking 2 #9s is a lot darker than the #14.

I used my auto dark welding helmet cranked to 13. I brought my helmet and 2 spares to work so the crew could see it too. We got about 75% coverage here in Red Deer at about 11:30 am. What I didn't think about is how the crescent moves as the moon traverses the sun. At the start it was cutting out the right side and a little past halfway the sun looked like it was frowning.

I woke up this morning wondering just when the eclipse was, yard light was still on... and then I heard thunder. It was pretty dark for half the morning.

Ended up being cloudy but we could see it with a welding helmet.

Well, that didn't work. Let's try something else!
We had almost 100% totality here in St. Louis. I wandered over to the window and borrowed a coworker's glasses. Pretty neat.

Awesome clear skies here. My camera gear worked great. Here are 2 of my favorite shots.

Awesome experience. I went to West Frankfort Illinois (about 20 miles from Carbondale) and viewed it there. The totality was what made the experience.

The drive back was the only downside. It took over 5 hours to drive 100 miles because of the traffic.
