i have a 1988 ford ranger xlt 2.9l manual trans, the clutch was just replaced. i was driving today and i hear a grinding sound, the engine runs perfect starts every time, i can feel the clutch is there but when i go to put it in gear it doesnt move and only revs. i had the truck running and drove as i would normally and it caught in the top end of fourth only to move and make the grinding sound, it is now parked could this be my transmission? any suggestion i need to figure this out asap this truck pays the bills..

It could be a problem with the clutch.... or it could be a transmission problem... or stripped gears in the rear axle...or....
Need more information, basically. Can you put the shifter in a gear? If it is 4x4, is the transfer case engaged? (and is it a 4x4?) If it is 4x4, does putting it in 4x4 make it move? With the truck off and in gear, climb under the truck and check the driveshaft(s) for play (both wiggle it and check for U-joint wear and see if it will turn). Block the front axle, jack up the rear axle (USE JACKSTANDS), and see if the driveshaft will turn by hand with the transmission in gear. Check both wheels for sloppy movement. Put it back down and pull the rubber plug on the bellhousing (if equipped) use a flashlight to look at the clutch while someone works the clutch pedal and verify movement. I'm sure I'll think of something else to check.... but we'll start there...

Doesn't mean its not the clutch. Was it running fine before you put the clutch in? if so wouldnt the obvious conclusion be that you put the clutch in wrong?

It could be your transfer case. Mine was messing up, seemed to pop out of gear and it ended up being a stripped something or other in the t-case. Jack up the rear axle, put it in gear, spin the wheels. see if they spin without the engine turning over. It will give you somewhere to start....

If it grabs but grinds in 4th and acts like it is in neutral in all other gears the transmission is at fault. Specifically the counter shaft is not engaging properly to one of the other two.
