1990 Ranger V6 4.0L, 4x4. Is it possible to replace the oil pan gasket with the engine still in the truck? The Chilton manual is telling me I have to remove the engine from the truck, but I really don't feel like doing that. And if you can do it engine still in the truck, how hard is it for a not professional at all who taught himself auto repair from YouTube?

Possible but not worth it. The engine has to be disengaged from the engine and lifted. At that point you might as well save yourself the headaches of working in the vehicle and yank it.

yes, but disengaged from transmission

You can't drop the oil pan down enough to install a new gasket and have it actually work better than the leaking gasket :)

You need to unbolt the trans and move it back
Then you need to raise the engine enough to get the oil pan down to clear the oil pump pick up and slide it out the back, which is why you had to move the transmission.

Which was adsm08's point, since you have to have an engine hoist to lift the engine anyway.....................
