As stated by Jim in the tech articles, when swapping a Dana 28 TTb for a Dana 35 TTb, one must shorten the drive shaft by 1 to 1.5 inches.

Is it possible to use the Drive shaft from the Dana 35 doner vehicle instead of shortening the Dana 28 vehicle drive shaft? Is the Dana 35 vehicle drive shaft the correct length?

That is something of a multi-faceted question.

The answer really depends on your transmission and transfer case.

The some of the transmissions used with the 35 were longer than any of the transmissions used with the 28.

Also, the 35 was usually (but not always) paired with a 1354 t-case, which has a different front output, and thus a different connection, than the 1350 that was usually paired with the 28.

If you have a shorter trans, like the FM145, which is likely in 87, then any of the D35 front shafts will be too long.

Also likely in 87 is that you have the 1350 case with the slip yoke in the case, instead of the u-joint front output used on the 1354.

So, all that considered, unless the swap is the last thing you are doing on a list of swaps then it will be easier to get the driveshaft shortened.
