I know that grinding a tooth is stronger but how weak is the notched cross pin?

Specs: B2, 2.9, auto, soon to be FW D44/8.8, 5:13's, welded spiders, 36's, maybe some day 38's.

For locked rigs, grind a tooth down and get the solid cross pin. The locker/weld will put more stress on the pin than you think. It may hold up, but why take the chance? Do it right (especially since your already in there) and it will always be there when you need it. (I have seen unlocked rigs break a stock cross pin as well).

My credo

Can I keep the stock pin if I grind or is there a stronger one I should buy?

If it's a full-round pin, keep it.

No reason to grind if you have the notched cross pin (Im not sure on the deep gears on this). If I remember correctly the notched pin will have enough clearance to install/remove (the notch allows this)

I think the solid pins are all hardened , so I dont remember seeing anything that one is stronger than another (could be wrong on this though. Its been a while since I shopped for one)

I ended up grinding it, had to grind more than I liked.

Both my Explorer and Ranger have a tooth ground down. I have never had any issues out of either (explorer done in 07, and Ranger done in 2000).

The notch creates a stress riser on the pin. They've been known to break from fatigue after some time (also some lunchbox lockers won't work properly with a notched pin).

Looks pretty typical. As long as the tooth contact pattern doesn't hit within that area (it almost never does), there's no effect on strength or wear. Just make sure all the metal dust from grinding it is cleaned up.

I agree, I've done STUPID things to my 8.8 with 5.13's and a ground tooth and no issues... during a tractor pull event with a wee bit too much axle wrap I broke the plug weld on the passenger side axle tube which twisted the tube 13*, bent a leaf spring, as well as bent and twisted the drive shaft, gears are perfectly fine...
