I knew a couple Spanish American war vets, sons of Civil War vets. My grandfather went from farming with mules to the modern equipment of today. I have plowed and harvested with mule teams myself. The older I get, the more I enjoy history. If I could have a vehicle with modern reliability, old school simplicity, modern mileage and good old torque I would be happy.
I knew a Civil War vet when I was a kid. He served during the last year of the war in honor of his father who died in battle, and fought in Antietam @ the age of 15. A very cool old man who fished every day and told great stories. I loved hanging out with old men when I was a kid, and learned a lot from them. Another "old" buddy of mine from back then was Chief Thundercloud, a genuine Comanche chief who had a vacation bungalow near my house. I'd sit with him entire weekends to just talk, share stories and trade arrowheads we had found. He taught me the truth about native American culture during a time of severe ignorance in this country. (the 70's and 80's)

I wish I had listened more and had the appreciation for history I have now.

Just remember something else I miss from back in the day. Now I'm sure some of you will disagree with my fondness for this memory, but to each his own. Right?. here it is. I USED TO LIGHT UP A CIGGARETTE AND SMOKE ONE ANYWHERE I WANTED!!! That's right; in the restaurant, at the mall, while shopping, in the doctor's office or hospital, on the bus, in a plane, in government buildings - literally ANYWHERE. We even had a student smoking lounge in my high school. All public places featured ashtrays every few feet and you simply smoked em if you had em. How in the world did we all allow those granola eating, self righteous, pansy ass "progressive liberals" progress this country right down the shitter in one generation??? If I were to have fell into a coma 30 years ago and miraculously woke up today; I would think I'd died and gone to an authoritarian, sci-fi, hell designed by insurance claims adjusters. Tragically, my sons only know what a great country this used to be through stories that older relatives and I shared. I remember America as a somewhat rough place where bad things sometimes happened, but for good or bad, we had privacy and true liberty. I would gladly trade all the so called "security, equality and improvements" of today to have that America back.

I'm all for progress, just not a lot of the "progress" "popular"-CULTure would have people thinking they want.

Absolutely in agreement. Progress in the right direction is wonderful. Somewhere down the line we took a very dangerous turn in this country. It began to be obvious to me in the 80's, and we have surpassed every concern of "what will come of this?" I could have ever imagined.

I am glad public smoking is mostly gone, being in public is much more enjoyable with that crap reeking everywhere.

Having rights doesn't mean you can tramp all over other's rights just because you are free to do whatever you please.

Oh you just had to say that...:icon_rofl:

It used to be a real treat to get the Reader's Digest in the mail...and my first sexual experience was almost with a woman in National Pornographic...er, Geographic...believe it or not...back then us kids used to climb trees to look at or read porn magazines...which probably should be a banned activity because if you're ever climbed up a tree and tried holding onto something while reading or viewing naked hooters with your eyes bugging out of their sockets and your wiener bulging out of your pockets it can be a very dangerous activity...

That's why I said "almost"...as I also almost fell out of the tree...dropped my dang magazine right into the river and it floated away before I could scramble down and find a stick to fish it out...

So, yeah, I remember fishing for porn magazines back in the day...

I will agree to give all you smokers your permission to smoke back anywhere you want, IF I can have the same level of permission to leave my boot prints on your face when I have to smell your pansy ass being too scared to just shoot yourself in the head to commit suicide and it then interferes with my ability to simply breath.

People who light up in any public space without permission from everyone around should be arrested and charged with assault, just as if they had physically attacked someone because smoking is a privilege, breathing is a right.

I can see this going downhill rather rapidly...so...

^ This guy ^

is not driving a stick...he's having a crap and flushing the toilet...many times...

like anger...

best not to let these things build up...

I remember back in the day when we didn't have indoor plumbing...my sister taking me out one very cold winter day and she had to call the fire department because my butt got stuck to the toilet seat...no, wait...that was the fence at the local outdoor hockey rink...but it was my tongue that got stuck on the fence...

it is easier to fix and understand than "her"
i dont smoke.....i dont enjoy others smoking in my face.

but i sure as fawk would not tell someone or think i should tell someone to NOT smoke outside in public. smoking is not as bad as its sold either.

and for damn sure the government has no...absofukinglooootely NO MOTHERFAWKING BUSINESS telling a private business it cant allow smoking on its premises. ever. even if its doors are open to the public.

if you dont like it...go somewhere else.

theres more then enough room for both models.

Wow. I forgot what a sensitive topic public smoking is. Even back in the day when it was perfectly ok, I always had the courtesy to put my stogie out, or move elsewhere if someone politely asked me to. Honestly, I think the whole "evils of smoking" propaganda campaign was launched in the interests of gaining higher profit margins for insurance companies. Anyone who thinks our government gives a rats ass about our health or safety is delusional. We are nothing more than profit generators, and we are taught to believe and behave in whatever way makes the shareholders the most money. A black friend of mine who also holds a PHD in social science said slavery never went away; it just became an equal opportunity institution.

I admit that I have a severe, and often knee-jerk type (over)reaction to the topic of public smoking, but I do come by it honestly.

I have respiratory issues, asthma, allergies, and frequent sinus infections, often severely agitated by tobacco smoke. On a bad day just being around someone who was just out smoking is enough to trigger them. Add to that the fact that the smokers I deal with day to day are some of the rudest, most self-centered people I know makes it easy for me to paint all smokers with the same brush.

I work with a couple guys who, despite having been asked nicely at first, and then not so nicely, make a point of standing right outside my door in the summer while they smoke. The boss won't do anything about it either because he smokes (so he doesn't see the problem I have), and these guys are his golfing buddies.

I'm with adsm08 on this anti-smoking stuff. I recall decades ago sitting in a hospital emergency room FULL of ppl waiting to be seen, and some jerk lights up a cigarette, with no concern abt whether anybody had bad lung issues. I was already struggling hard to breathe before he lit up, and then it got even worse. I was choking off, and I had to leave the E.R. just so I could breathe. Some inconsiderate smokers don't give a damn. Grrr.
