Hi All

I am looking at buying a 97 Ranger 4.0L Automatic.

The seller states that there is "Play in the Column Gear Shifter"

Is this a common issue?
Is there a repair or anything?
Should I be concerned about an expensive repair?

I have not seen it yet, trying to set up a time this after noon.
Our 94 is a standard so not too familiar automatic shifters.

Thanks in advance!
Bill

The actual lever that selects the position on the transmission is by the transmission if I'm not mistaken. the handle just moves an indicator and the selector down by the transmission.

Outside of that, are you aware that these transmissions (all automatics actually) are very expensive to replace or have rebuilt? ($2-3k, unless you are the DIY transmission rebuilding type)

Common issue and it’s either one or two things. There is a plate on the back end of the Column that the linkage connects to. Some times the bolts that hold the plate on get loose. Just pull them out and apply locktite.

Another issue is the plastic bushings that the shifter tube go through get worn out. You can see this play by removing the top column shroud and shift the gears. If there is play in the tube or you see the black plastic bushings moving out of place just replace them. Dorman makes them and they are only like $10.

Took a look at it and found the Shifter cable mount on the side of the trans is at fault.
The end of the shifter boot is floating some so the cable will need to be replaced.

Thanks all for your replies!
