Just picked up a manual 1999 4wd 3.0. It shifts smoothly when cold but seems to get much harder as it reaches operating temp. Where should I start? Thanks.

My credo
In theory, theory and practice are the same. In practice, they are different.
Weird. Just a guess. But I would drain the transmission and refill with the proper oil ( see owner's manual). It actually takes a particular type of ATF but I always get the names mixed up. Also check clutch fluid level and top off with brake fluid if it's low. It could act funky if your clutch is on the hairy edge of not disengaging.

Thanks. It's a manual so no ATF but I will change the trans oil. And I'll also make sure the clutch is adjusted properly.
Yes ATF. Your Mazda built manual transmission takes Mercon ATF.

No adjustments on the clutch either. It is hydraulic.

I've been reading many other threads here and just want to add some info on my situation. The shifting has gotten worse. It's pretty much near impossible to shift into any gear. With the truck off I can get all gears like silk. Truck off clutch in or out. The moment I start the truck the shifter seems locked. I can only get 1st or reverse if I slam it over and over. I read this can bend forks so I won't be driving it that way but I did try it. I'll be changing the fluid tomorrow but after reading I expect the fix isn't going to be that simple.

Read some more and tried two more things. Shifted into 1st with truck off then started it. No creep or pulling. Also tried pushing clutch to the floor and letting my foot slip off several times. Read that here. And right after it shifted perfectly. Drove fine.

Thanks for any further advice.

Sounds to me like the clutch hydraulics need bleeding. Probably the slave is on it's way out.
The clutch line from the master to the slave is convoluted and can be a bitch to bleed properly.
