My son and I have a 89 ex cab 4x4, we are swapping motor from 2.9 to 5.0. My question is does it make any difference which 5.0 ecm and wiring harness I use as long as it matches the connections on the motor.

We are using a manual trans and from other posts it sounds like a auto ecm will be OK with standard. Is this correct ?

The choices we have are a few different 89 - 94 mustang motors or a 97 mountaineer 5.0, which would anyone recommend using in regards to ecm and wiring etc.

The explorer has the tightest FEAD, but the mustang will have the better efi wiring for your setup, no programming needed of the ecu...

Thanks, we ended up buying a 1993 Thunderbird 5.0 HO. Hopefully it will work as well as the others.

We have the motor in the truck, having problems figuring out the wiring. do I need to use the thunder bird main harness to the eec or can I just splices things together.
I have the Harwood manual and I have the EVTM manuals for the thunder bird and the ranger, just not making much sense.

Remove the old Ranger engine/ECU harness and use the T-bird harness. It should be very similar to the Mustang harness in the Harwood manual. Most of the splices will be to the C105? (round connector in the driver side firewall) and a few for the VSS, etc. in the driver side fender area. You can re-use connectors from the old Ranger harness where needed and re-pin them to make the connections. The only hard part will be making sure the appropriate wires from the T-bird harness are connected to the Ranger and that's where a lot of time is spent in the EVTMs. It just takes patience working slowly to get it right.
