Hello folks, I have bought an 86 ford ranger with the 2.9 v6, 5 speed manual transmission with 4 wheel drive. I got to drive for one week before it started to act up. The exhaust smells like raw fuel, which I've been told it's running rich. I have replace the MAF sensor, TPS sensor, EGR MAP sensor, little black square just above the EGR valve, and replaced plugs and wires. Waiting on funds currently to replace the coil and distributor cap and rotor. I was told by a mechanic to set the 'hard' timing to cure the pulsation of the engine and clear up the rich issue. The engine rpms will fluctuate up and down while idling and some times it's hard to get started while hot or cold. Can anyone possibly confirm the timing would be the cause of the issues I'm having. Also, I'm not currently up to date on the Acronyms for all the sensors.
