With Penzoil Syncromax, fill to bottom of fill hole or a little higher? I read rumblings about a little more but now that I am there I can't find it...

Well the original intent was to go to the bottom of the fill hole.

I'd just fill to the normal level. I imagine that it's kinda the same concept as overfilling an engine... once it gets to a certain level or over it, the oil cavitates and turns to froth and the slingers don't work.

I'll bite - how would you go about filling it higher? The only way I can wrap my head around it is to use the shifter hole.

Pretty easy if it isn't in the truck.

I must have my wires crossed about the fluid level...

Wouldn't it be easier to install it without fluid?

It was no big deal to uninstall it with fluid, I didn't think it would make much difference. Its only 3-4qts of stuff, like an extra 7 pounds.

Now all the parts are sitting in fluid until I get around to installing it too.

Interesting. I guess I've always been afraid of getting dumped on while installing/removing so everything was drained first.

How much does the R2 weigh? The 4R70W was like 140 pounds as I recall. Enough that I never seriously considered installing it from underneath over just bolting it in and dropping it into place with the engine.

I haven't looked it up. Easier to move around than my NP205... better handles too though.

Not sure the R2 and 5.0 would go in together. The 2.8/A4LD was very tight coming out and overall longer than the setup I have in the truck now. A4LD is about the same length as an R2, 5.0 is obviously longer.

It might if you had a very tall hoist or even a gantry. I just have the cheap HF hoist and it was touch and go with the transmission attached. Dinged up the core support pretty well along the way.

You have a bigger engine bay than I do too. I couldn't get it tipped any more even with the bodylift to clear both the firewall and the radius arm brackets at the same time.

I’ll answer your question. Unless you wanna curse. Throw wrenches. And bash the ever living hell out of your firewall and floorpan. You can’t swing a 302 m5r2 in together. Been there. Done that

85. Fill till the fluid just dribbles out the fill plug. No more than that

Agreed, the Mazda transmissions don't really benefit from a slight overfill.

It's a different story with Mitsubishi transmissions, they tend to have oiling issues, which the extra little bit of oil seems to help with.

Park the truck at an angle, and you can get about a third to half-quart more in using the normal fill hole.

That must be where I picked it up from then.
