I know it is do-able. My main concern is how much can be directly swapped and bolted on. Both have 4 speed manual trans, so thinking new clutch and install diesel engine with manual trans that has transfer case and i should be good to go as far as engine/ trans.

Now, when it comes to driveshafts and engine mounting is where I am really concerned... The diesel is bolted up in a 2WD now so I was wondering if anyone might know right off-hand if the 2WD engine mounts for the diesel will work on a 4x4 frame that had a 2.8l v6.

Another question I have that I've been sifting through this forum looking for information on is a possibility of bolting a 5 speed(w transfer case for 4x4) to this diesel. From what I've read, It doesn't look like I can find a 5 speed for a 4x4?

Why install an engine you could stop by grabbing the balancer with your hands? I personally think V8 swaps and Cummins 3.9 swaps are kind of, well, not me. I salute a diesel swap of the size you are contemplating, but not a 50hp thing that can't reach modern highway speeds. Those trucks were built when the speed limit was federally mandated at 55mph--which is slower than I go down my driveway. If I were going to bother with a diesel swap I would use a Tdi VW engine. The 1.9 in my '96 Passat has a re-flashed computer done by a previous owner, and I don't really like it, but it probably matches a pushrod 4.0 in power and torque, though at a much lower rpm. It belches out satisfying amounts of black smoke and the front end floats all over the road in 1st and 2nd gear. It still gets 50mpg on cruise control on the highway and 37mpg in daily driving in town. People turn these engines sideways and use them in other things.

The engine you are contemplating is very weak. You would be surprised at the amount of violence a Tdi VW engine is capable of. And my car has 320,000 miles on it. Absolutely bulletproof.
