Not good. My 3.73 gear ratio 4x4 4.0 on 30 inch tires would struggle to get mid teens if it was lucky. My 4.2 F150 with the same size tires and 3.55 gears would get about High teens and adverage about 3 mpg more.

I have a 2003 4.0, auto, extended cab and I get 15 to 18 around here. I've had my Ranger 6 years and on ONE trip I got 21.8 and 21.3 mpg! What nobody has mentioned is the gear ratio, mine is 411. That's what's killing the gas mileage on these trucks and the ethanol! Location, Central Florida.

OK here's for the guys saying I'm not but I get about 21.5 running back and forth to work. 04 4.0 auto 2wd. Reg cab short bed step side from an 01 (used to be 8' bed fleetside). 3.55 limited slip 8.8 rear. I don't drive slow but not a speed demon either. About 60 to 65. West Central PA.
Oh and not interstate highways. All secondary 2 Lane roads.

The memories of a man in his old age are the deeds of a man in his prime
My 88 supercab wood hauler 4x4 2.9 on 31's with 4:10's gets 15-17 hauling, up to 21 on the highway, flat and empty.
My 00 supercab steppy 4x4 4.0 on 33's with 4:10's 14-16.6 highway depending on my foot. Consistent 15 cruising the woods.

4.0 4x4 Bronco II with a 2wd (unfortunately) m50d, 3.73s, and 32s gets close to 20 mpg... city driving! A 40 mile trip to work and back all week came in at like 25 mpg combined city/highway. The maf and O2 sensors play a big part in the mileage and I also soaked my injectors in acetone for a week before I put the engine together.

Haha, I recently moved town's. Commute used to be 120 miles round trip all highway 75+. New commute is 40 miles round trip with lots of 45-ish mph stop and go.

Fuel milage dropped from a solid 21 to 16 mpg.... Damb it. I suppose I could get a little better if I could somehow keep my foot out of it.

'92, 4.0, 5-speed, 2wd, 3.08 rear
