Hey guys its been a while since I've been on but I've got an on going intermittent no start issue with my '99 3.0 flex fuel ranger. I've noticed its had an issue with not recognizing my chipped key from time to time but now I'm getting an antitheft code 16 (no communication) when this happens I've noticed the check engine light will not even illuminate koeo. I was able to reproduce the problem for a few times by striking the inertia switch and resetting it though it shouldn't be related to the engine light not coming on too. I can't reproduce the problem again however. Thoughts and advise on where to look and what to check would be greatly appreciated!!!

Computer may be dying. No CEL prove out can be a symptom of a bad PCM.

That's exactly what I'm afraid of. I have had many other intermittent issues like thekeyless entry stopped working for a few weeks. Its sorta making me think the gem module may have issues. Does the ecm relay get its signal power from it? I think next time it happens I'm going to try bypassing the ecm relay. Thoughts?

If it is the "gem" are those programmed by dealer or can I do install? Same with ecm flashing?

update.

I bought a relay pin out set yesterday and checked ecm relay running I have 11.5v at the coil 85/86 checking the diagram I noticed the diode in the circuit and swapped it with the ABS diode. Now I get 12.8v while running. It seems to me that this could be the problem.

My credo
Be nice, you may need help later!
Strange problem with my 94 XLT 3.0. Usually it starts but once in a while it decides it will not, at least until I fiddle with the code reader connection. It will not set a code but after connecting a jumper/code reader it usually starts. With 227,000 miles on the clock I'm guessing the main computer is slowly crapping out. While it cranks it acts like it is way out of time so I am checking the distributor next. When running it runs great! I am an ASE engine mechanic but at 71 I retired a decade ago and most of my work was on non-computer engines. My degree is in electronics so I am not totally lost...usually!?
