Hey fellow ranger turbo enthusiasts. I am new to this page and I am looking for info on where I can get a tuned ecm for my truck or someone that can tune them. I have the stock block that has been built with 8 to 1 pistons and a new head and bottom end. I started this project 15 years ago and never finished it. My 8 year old has decided that the time is now and I dont want to discourage his ambition. I am now at a place in life where I have the resources to do this right. So, I have a turbo off a murker and a ecm from the same car 1989 model with a auto tranny. My truck is a 1991 with a standard tyranny. Should I just swap ecms? I drove the truck yesterday, fired right up after sitting for 10 years (running on airplane fuel with no ethanol) with the factory ecm. It runs ok with the stock ecm but my son wants to take it to the drag races in a few weeks and I want to do it right. any direction on this ecm issue woudl be appreciated.

Thanks

So, need more details...

Stock ranger fuel injectors? Stock Ranger wire harness and all sensors? If all stock Ranger stuff on the engine other than pistons, do you have all the Marcur stuff?

That changes things dramatically, programming Ford computers isn't as simple as GM computers for whatever reason... The Ranger ECM won't work with the turbo injectors, there's two different types of injectors, normal and peak and hold or whatever Ford called it (don't remember off the top of my head). Since it started and ran I assume you have all Ranger stuff on there still, if so you are going to be severely limited on what you can do and the power it will support without mods. For going the more stock looking route, someone else will have to chime in, as I've only dealt with mixmatching stock parts from Turbo engines and those that work from the NA counterparts.

The "normal" way to get things going is to use the turbo ECM, I don't know how much it cares about not having the A4LD behind it... The turbo ECM lets you use the bigger turbo injectors (I think they're 35lb instead of 16lb, so big difference), but to use the turbo computer takes moving about 10 wires at the computer connector, converting your modern style MAF to the older style VAM and a couple other small things that really aren't important. For the record, there's a '91 wiring diagram and at least one turbo engine wiring diagram in the tech library or there used to be.

You might be able to get away with swapping to an injector that is more current and uses the normal signal, but you're going to have to deal with the MAF as well, the computer has no information at that much airflow (it might deal with 5psi but that's about it), someone else is going to have to chime in...

I have the murker injectors but have not installed them yet. All the wireing is stock ranger. I may still have the vam sitting around somewhere.... Can you not use the maf then? My fuel pressure it at 40psi with the stock pump. Is that high enough for the bigger injectors?

Thanks

Bobby, that looks like a good set up. A bit more pricey than I thought. I dont know all my cam specs, it's been awhile since I built it... I will call the guys and see what they can do. Thanks
