Ok so i got it to run, it runs good at idle. If it sputters when accelerating do i need to retard or advance the timing?

Why did you have the distributor out? You need the set the timing correctly. You need to have a timing light. The correct procedure is as follows; On the passenger side of the motor up around the intake manifold, is two wires with a plug on the end of them. Remove the plug. Start the truck set the timing to the spec I believe mine is 7.5 BTDC. Plug the plg back in.
