Hi guys ! I am about to start on a project and am wondering if I am going to have any major issues? I havea1992 Ranger extra cab 4x4 5 speed manual tranny. I picked it up down south so it has no rust issues. But the 2.9 engine does not have enough guts to pull my boat efficiently. I just purchased a 1994 Ranger extra cab 4x4 5 speed manual tranny. It has a 4.0 engine. Really bad rust issues, frame body floors etc. But it has low mmiles and runs and drives great. What I need to know is what kind of issues I am going to encounter doing a swap . engine tranny and all. Also I would like to know if the older manual shift transfer case will bolt up to the newer tranny with no problems. Thanks

It can and has been done.

It's going to be easier if you can get the engine harness (and computer?) from a 90-92 4.0 Ranger or 91-94 Explorer. Be aware that there are differences even in those years. Mix and match might not work. Should be good though as long as EGR (or lack of) matches up and the number of O2 sensors (Those 2 may have gone together. IDK)

The transfer case "shouldn't" be a problem.

If the 2.9 truck had the M5OD, I'd leave it assuming it works. It has better (IMO) gear ratios.

Might also want to look into the axles on both trucks. They could be worth swapping.

Good luck.
