Sounds like it's time to swap everything to a explorer.

Im sure its not wanted. But i know alot of toyota guys cut the back of the cab out if the trucks all exo. And run a seat there.

Granted they are all in california
The thought has crossed my mind more than once. But since I'm in the midwest, and this thing gets parked on the street, it's nice to keep the thing somewhat weather proof. Plus, I do still use it as a truck quite a bit and I can't really give up anymore bed space and have continue to have it somewhat useable as a truck.

I need to play around with the Car Seat some more, but dang these rear facing seats are just HUGE! Even making a platform for it to raise it up and fit between the seats doesn't look like it'll work out well. If Felt more comfortable doing it, I would turn the car seat sideways and then it would fit in the Xtra cab portion just fine. But there's that little voice in the back of my head telling me that's not a great idea :icon_twisted:

It'll either go down in one of three ways:
1) I'll sell/Part/roll the truck and make this a non issue
2) I'll figure something out to make a car seat fit
3) We'll just deal with it as it is until he get's big enough for a front facing seat.

As it is right now, the only time we "need" to fit all three of us in there at once is when we go get firewood, otherwise I can just leave the wife or Kid at home while I go wheel (though I'm not really hip on doing that too much).

We'll see!

24th Off Road Trip – SIJA Jeep Jam at Flat Nasty Off Road 5-3-14

Started out the day with some good grease:

A good chunk of the group (one of these things is not like the others):

We covered a hair over 11 miles in the park. Most of our time was spent on 18 and 14, with some wandering around in the afternoon:

Knocked 14.5" off the front of the bed, and relocated the fuel filler at the same time:

FWIW, To run true 40" tall tires on this setup, I'd only have to trim off the fender flares (black portion). 37's stuff nicely with the stock flares. Hope that helps!

25th Off Road Trip – SMORR 6-21-14

We headed down to SMORR with several folks from SIJA and MO4wd. Some familiar faces and some strangers. Good times were had. Lots of photos in the link below:

Slideshow of all the photos

Loaded up the truck and went to work on Friday, patiently waiting for the bell to ring to head South:

We had to make a quick stop in Rolla for some grub and check out the XJ’s steering. It turned out that the ram for the hydro assist had worked itself loose causing it to dart around some. A quick fix and we were back on the road:

Just outside of Mt. Grove MO, we ran into green skies, cloud rotation, and some major rain and cross winds. The wind blew me onto the should at one point, and it was blowing hard enough to force me down two gears. Crazy!:

All was calm when we reached SMORR though which was nice as we were tent camping for the night:

The next morning we started following Al around in his Truggy hitting some of the sights in the park. While I didn’t get to run around all day due to my running issues, I still managed to cover 11.25 miles which isn’t too shabby:

This was a fun little waterfall. Lots of traction!

Saturday Night It rained pretty good which put a damper on the night wheeling, so Sunday Morning I packed up a wet camp and hit up a small café in Houston for Breakfast:

And threw everything out in the sun to dry out when I got home:

Three wasn’t much Carnage to report. My truck had developed a pretty healthy miss on the way down to SMORR. A set of spark plug wires from Bray, and a new plug sourced from town made my truck run better than it has in a long time! The red TJ wound up shearing a few teeth off the ring gear up front, but that was on the last obstacle of the day so it chose a good time to let go.

A fantastic trip and I look forward to others!

Highlight reel from the day.

26th Offroad Trip – Washita 7-26-14

This is the first time I’ve been down to Washita since the new ownership has taken over. While they aren’t open as much as they used to be, the park is better marked than it has ever been! It’s been over a year since I’ve made the trip down there so it was nice to get back to the old stomping grounds, even if it was 200°F out side! Needless to say it was extremely dry which limited traction quite a bit (the dirt was very powdery).

St. Joe State Park is nearby and we kept seeing some high dollar sand rigs pass us by on the way down:

We traveled about 6 miles wandering through Fubar (A4), up and down Outside the wire (B10), part of Parris Island (Spotters alley), and taking the casual route out on Ground Pounder (Trail 4) to Swamp Doggie (A5):

No real damage from the group other than some overheating. I did mange to bash in my drivers door a touch more (the window actually goes up better now!), and bend my rear DS again. I wound up having to make the trip home in FWD which really sucked with that locker in there. I’m in no hurry to do that again! Light duty Tcase 4tw!

Lots of videos from the day, all of them in 720 so crank up the resolution:

All and all a good trip though slightly bittersweet as this was likely the last trip the truck will be making to this park. I’m currently on the hunt for the trucks replacement so that I can start taking the family out on these wheeling adventures again. Depending on when that vehicle shows up, the truck will give up its life at that point.

My credo
it is easier to fix and understand than "her"
so whats the over-under at this point in the creation of this rig.?.?.?

do you wish you had a xj or some sort of wrangler?... or are you ok with the overall performance of this platform?

back when lil bob was car seat bound i put it on a crate strapped down with a 10 k strap and the back of his seat fit thru the slider with it open.

but he loved to kick the hell out of me all the time to get my attention as his feet were right between the seats.

i left room on my headach rack to go back 6-8 inches on my cab. i think i will put a small bench with the cab wall kicked back at some point...the jump seats work h\fine for short trips though....but there is not much left back there these days...getting rotten.

I've done the XJ thing several times now and while they are a good platform, they are unibody and getting kind of old at this point. A framed vehicle is much easier to build and quieter. Plus, all of the XJ's are melting around here and I hate dealing with rust :) Size wise, they're perfect for the areas I wheel and the overland trips I've taken.

For us, the wranglers are a ball around town and off road, BUT! Multiple hours on the highway tends to bring the suck. I don't really have a desire to drive a soft top Jeep across the country ever again, at least not on the interstate.

At this point I'm extremely happy with how well the rig works and wouldn't hesitate to drive it across the country tomorrow. Going back through the build there are a few things I would have done differently to arrive at the point I am at now:

- Skipped the D44/D60 combo and jumped right up to the D60/14Bolt combo I have now. I grossly underestimated how much this pig was going to weigh when completed and the 3/4 ton axles just weren't up to the task. If I had run a lighter wheel/tire combo I might have been able to milk them a bit longer, but the Dana 44 ball joints hated life with the heavy wheels

- I would like to have about 10" less wheel base (I'm about 115" right now). I often belly out on climbs, and the technical trails are a bit of a chore sometimes. Plus the extra wheel base means that my rear drive shaft often takes alot of abuse. A traction bar / drive shaft skid would help out in this department.

- I would probably skip on the recentred H1's and the .mil surp tires. I'm usually running 10-12 psi off road since if I drop lower than that I'm dragging diff's everywhere. At that pressure, you really don't need double bead locks. The tires themselves work very well around these parts off road, but leave a little to be desired on road (balance), but that's probably more of a function of the wheels.

- The running leafs up front with the shackles up front work very well. well enough that I have to run limit straps to keep my shocks alive. But the draw back is that I have to run a track bar/panhard on road to help out with the steering (Its vague without the bar on there). The other draw back is that this thing eats bushings on the front leafs. But that happens with short flexy leafs. A .mil wrapped spring would be nice, but my aftermarket springs are holding up well without it. The thing rides real nice off and on road. That said I will likely go RA or 3 link on the next build just to do something different.

- I would like a small hydro assist setup. The stock ranger box has more than enough oomph to move things around, but I would like to take some of the stress off of it. Plus I think a small ram will help keep the thing pointed the right way off road.

So as far as platforms go, the RBV is pretty dang good one. There is alot of life left in this truck after nearly 4 years of hard abuse off road. The doors still close fine, it seals up well, heck, the AC even still works! If it was and XJ, I would be ready to scrap it by now just because the shell would have been completely tweaked.

But the Ranger itself is just too small for these new car seats that seem to be 'required' these days. I've gone as far as borrow a friends forward facing seat (a fairly small one at that) to see if I could make it work in the rear of the truck, and no dice. So as a family wheeler, it's just not going to work. Had I known back then that a Kid was going to show up, I would have started with an Ex.

Explorer. You can re use 90% of this stuff. Doubler axles etc
That's the plan. A 2 door Ex is roughly the same size as an XJ which means it will fit very well on the trails around here. For reference, this ranger is roughly the size of a 4 door ex, just with alot less glass to blow out

While I have my eye open for one, I'm not in a huge rush so the Ranger will be hanging out for a while. I might even try selling the whole shebang again to see if there is any interest, but at this point I'm planning on pulling the axles/doubler/etc out and sell/scrap the rest. In an ideal world, I'd love to pull that stuff out and sell the shell to someone who wants an exo'd bob'd ranger as it really is ready to rock. We'll see what happens...
