I finally happened across a simple answer for the lousy cupholder. Leave the standard cupholder clicked on to the plastic buttons and simply Velcro and use sticky wall gum to fasten in an aftermarket adjustable cupholder in front of the present one.

Which style cup holder are you referring to? I have the floor mounted cup holders around the shifter and I only had two issues with it. The first was my fault and I didn't raise up the insert for my water bottle and it fell out and the second is I just wish there was more room to lift a tall cup, like a McDonald's/Burger King large, up out of it when the ashtray is open. So, it makes me wonder which one you are referring to the center console or the floor mounted ones.
