For a Mustang you will pretty much be looking for a 4-cylinder Fox body. The A4LD was a light duty transmission and never would have stood up to the 5.0. Those cars got AODs.

I will have to dig for it, I am pretty sure I have the floor unit, or at least most of it from a Ranger. I also picked up a 92 Mustang this week that originally had an A4LD, but was T5 swapped already. It came with a ton of spare parts that I haven't looked through yet, the original shifter may be in with them.

A RBV floor shifter has a mechanism that bolts on the frame rail beside the transmission bellhousing. A Foxbody has no frame... so I doubt a Mustang shift linkage will do you much good.

Aerostar would probably be closer, I bet they had to change something though.

That would b great!let me know what u can find for the ranger floor shifter.also the other reply to my question said that a mustang shifter probably won't work since it doesn't have a frame.that sounds pretty accurate.do u agree?

the shift lever is different between the floor and column shifter. With floor shifter it points up and column shift points down. It's not to hard to change the lever with the trans out of the vehicle but you need the correct part installed. The two shifter work in opposite directions.

Yes.

And with a floor shifter you can't use headers on a 4.0. You have to use stock style manifolds and Y-pipe. The 4.0 never had a floor shifter, so the header companies never took it into account and they try to occupy some of the same space. The stock exhaust is the same shape as a 2.9 and so it fits.

I don't know anything about fitting a 302 in a Ranger.

I only know what I do about the A4LD vs headers because a few years ago I bought an 87 auto that was already 4.0 swapped, and the guy tried putting headers on. The driver's side header ends about 1/2 in from the pivot rod that runs from the frame over to the trans itself, and is pointed right at the rod. There was no room to move it, tweak your pipes around it, or anything else. Factory manifolds and Y-pipe were the only solution I could find.

And before you go wondering if 4x4 headers would work, there is no difference between the 2wd and 4x4 headers for the 4.0. This is something that doesn't work because nobody ever thought to make it work, since the 4.0 never came with a floor shifter.

I used a B&M Unimatic cable floor shifter for my V8. Vastly different than the Ford bellcrank design. They work on a bunch of transmissions, you might check and see if the A4LD is on their list.

I don't know of any OEM V8 floorshifter that is a drop in deal for a RBV.

As far as running ok, if you keep the pipe sizes correct it can.

As far as being street legal, fawk no.
