I had the right front wheel off and the manual hub came off with the wheel . Grease looked OK, there were a few shiny spots here and there. I just messed with it trying various spots until it slid right up against the rotor. A short drive down town didnt reveal any troubles. What is missing? A Tinnerman nut, or some such geezus clip?

nope. it comes off like that. there is a mod in the tech library to fix that

OoooKay, I guess. I was underneath with a little pair of vise grips shifting the 1354 T case into 4 high. Yah, I know, I read the how to about rehabilitating the shift motor, but the Ranger came to me without the shift motor. The truck is getting very lightly used until I replace the clutch and a few U joints. Thank you for the speedy reply.

sorry ... I miss read that ..... the auto hubs come off like that ..... don't think the manual ones are supposed to.

No, the manual hubs come off like that too.

In 10 years I don't think I've once taken a front wheel off my truck without the hub coming along with it.

Definitely a Ford light bulb moment. So, you are off in the weeds and you have a flat. It is a dark and stormy night. Sometime in this scenario, the hub gets dropped in the pine needles. Oh well. I'm a noob, I can learn. As an ex full size Jeeper, I've seen some stuff . :icon_confused:

Yep, auto and manual hubs for the Rangers, Explorers and Bronco IIs up until 97 all come off like that.

And all the full-size Fords up until the independent front suspension (instead of TTB and TIB) had the hubs with a bunch of small cap screws that come out via an allen key.

Still not sure which one I'd rather work on. Neither one can be fun at times.

BTW, I have seen the RBV hubs held on by some little clip that looks like an internal toothed lock washer placed on the wheel studs. I'm guessing that maybe they did come from the factory with such a gizmo on there but it looks like it would be a real PITA when it comes time to take the hub off for some reason or another.

Those stupid pressed retainers? Pff, we break them off. New drums and rotors have them on too. They are of factory assembly only. Robots can't keep the hub hanging while they put the wheel on.

Mine still has them on one wheel, they can be a pain when you have to go deeper but they are kind of nice for holding the hub in place at times too.

my b2 had them when i got it... annoying little bastards... i'm glad they are gone!

when you take the tire off, just lift some weight off of it, so its not dragging the hub off when you take the tire off. i take mine off all the time w/out the hub coming off.

theres -87-88- model d44 with the hat style ranger hubs as well.

Thank you Jesus, I am so glad I found this post. Had front wheels off to do some front end checking and balance the fronts same thing. I was freekin pissed. I have never had the hubs pull off like that. Yes I said that too...................( F*&@ing piece of SH&^ ), fist words, next wheel was well even more graphic and colorful, Use your imagination.

ive done it to mine but i used 1/4-20 fasteners and did it on new rotors before the new rotors were put on. i already had the 1/4-20 stainless fasteners, thats why i went with that size. use anti-sieze if you do this, at some point you will need to get them back off again.

Haaaa haaaa....brought back memories, guys!! I remember my first Ranger was my 83 4x4 regular cab / long bed. The first time I pulled a front wheel I freaked out. I had no idea it would do that either. I called a buddy that worked out out local tireshop and he said it was supposed to do that. Darn...freaked me out. That is why I bought a repair manual and always had one for anything else I bought....just in case.....lol

is this a big deal?
