Use the search function. This has been brought up a bunch of times. Just put a V6 in it and enjoy that...cheaper as well.

How about grafting the front subframe of a VW Tdi to it?

Somewhere around here there's several.

At least 2 have Mercedes Benz OM617 engines (or relatives of that engine), I think they both used the whole MB setup, trans and all.

One guy in Canada successfully grafted a 1.9L VW TDI to his Ranger, using the M5OD and existing drivetrain.

This project is so involved and technical there really isn't an answer to your questions. Well, there is, but it requires a response rivaling that of a college textbook. Basically we'd tell you E-V-E-R-Y-T-H-I-N-G, which is kind of annoying because several weeks of Google searching would save us massive amounts of time and typing (it's not like we get paid to respond ya know)

I will give you a head start though, this forum is on VW TDI's:

http://forums.tdiclub.com/forumdisplay.php?s=&f=63&page=1&pp=50&sort=lastpost&order=desc&daysprune=-1

This is specifically the TDI conversions section. Read my friend, read like you've never read before.

These 2 are particularly good:

TDI Town & Country
http://forums.tdiclub.com/showthread.php?t=210943

Saturn TDI Conversion
http://forums.tdiclub.com/showthread.php?t=193909

There are MANY others jam packed full of info as well.

I had all the intentions of the world of swapping a diesel into my Ranger, but no matter how much I scrimp and save I always get some kind of medical bill, horrible part failure that I have to fix, etc, etc. It is not for the faint of heart.

...and you will spend $$$ no matter the engine you choose.

Good luck!

*EDIT*

Found the Ranger!

Here on TRS I believe we have at least one of each of the following in rangers:
Powerstroke:
7.3
6.0
2.3

Cummins 4bt

Chevy non turbo(can't remember size)

IDI 7.3(pre powerstroke)

And probably some more I don't remember

I meant make the Ranger front wheel drive and use everything. You could use the solid rear axle out of a minivan, which probably has more load carry capacity than the Ranger axle.

The Tdi would have no problem with a Ranger. My Passat is about as heavy as a 4x4 Ranger at 3,400# curb. I haven't messed with it, but someone has. It cranks out black smoke when you nail it and you can't shift fast enough to keep up with the tach. I would love to have this engine in my B2 to replace the 4.0. It's half the cid, but feels very similar and gets 3x the mileage--although it is 900# lighter than my B2, I'll bet it would get twice the mileage in the same vehicle.

My best advice is:

Have a fat wallet and a second car to drive for a while. Your going to spend quite a bit of money, and take a lot of time.

Check out 4btswaps.com, Theres some good info on there for diesel swaps.

Never seen the 7.3 ranger, but everyone seems to like the 4bt cummins because it is a simple engine and doesn't take much to run

I was trying to go for the more practical diesel swaps, ones you can actually street drive and pound out miles on.

ANY of the 4 cylinder "4BT" style engine class is going to run you at the least 800lbs (dry weight) of just engine. Not adding in the bigger trans, and everything else. This needs to be considered.

Strap another 4-500 lbs of sand to the hood of your Ranger and you'll have a good idea on how it drives.

Snoranger is apparently daring to try it, and I am curious as to how it'll work out in the end.

Just saying if you go for a diesel other than one out of a car, you'll likely be needing to help out the front suspension.

Other engines to look at are compact equipment diesels such as the Cummins B3.3. Several people have swapped them into other Ranger size vehicles, Wranglers, S10s, etc. It comes stock with 85 hp but can get into the 140 hp range with a little work.

This is the most informative thread I've found on the B3.3: http://www.dieseltruckresource.com/dev/b3-3t-jeep-yj-t112807.html

It think it was a joint venture between Komatsu and Cummins to develop it. It's an ok little engine. It was never intended as a vehicle engine but several people have decided it's good application for it. Some of those guys on that thread are getting upper 30s for mpg in smaller vehicles, iirc.

Mooktank comes to mind. Hes got a 3.3 in a genII Explorer sport. Hes getting MPG in the deep 30s.
