Mustang 4.0 same motor

Wanted to know if the 4.0 mustang v6, say like in a 1997 mustang is the same motor that is in the 1997 4.0 ranger v6? I see a lot of 4.0 mustangs with cams and sound sweet.

No, not in '97
Ford's Cologne 4.0l OHV was used in Ranger/Mazdas, explorer/Navahos, and aerostars.
It was in Rangers/Mazdas from '90 to '00
It wasn't used in Mustangs, the Cologne 2.8l was

In '97 explorers got the 4.0l SOHC, Rangers got it in '01, Mustangs used this engine from '5 to '10

'94 to '04 Mustangs used Ford's essex 3.8l V6
In 1997 I see 2 engine options for a Mustang, 3.8l V6 and 4.6l V8 (there was also a higher HP 4.6l offered)

Essex is a 90deg V engine
Cologne is a 60deg V engine

The 4.0 that was used in the Mustangs was basically the same engine that was used in the Explorer and Ranger, it has a few minor differences like intake, and I don't think the Mustangs had the balance shaft in them. But like Ron said, it wasn't in the Mustang in 97.

It should also be noted that since the 4.0 SOHC is an interference engine the process of camming it requires aftermarket heads and thicker head gaskets.

Thats good info to know. I was thinking about camming out my 4.0 in my ranger. But don't see a lot of aftermarket stuff for it. But you see a lot of stuff for Mustangs. Might just save my money and do a V8 swap some day. Just thought it would be easier to cam it out.

If you have a pushrod version the Comp 411 and 422 cams are spoken of highly.

The pushrod 4.0 can be cammed without changing the heads, but I'm pretty sure they do have to come off.

Thats good info. I'll check it out. I am more out to make it sound like a V8 and add some performance to it. Have a nice radical loop idle. Want the truck to have some attitude.

Yeah, the OHV heads must come off to withdraw the followers from the block because the heads overhang the lifter bores.
