Ok guys. Call me crazy. Call me stupid. Call me a genius. Whatever your take, I have an Idea! I was going to make a square shaft for the front of my BII but was worried the "top" of the shaft would just fall into the lower portion due to the slip yoke on the original T-case. The answers, so far, are to A: Spend some mega cake on a custom SYE. or B: Put a 1354 in place of the 1350.
I do not have the cake to get a SYE. And putting a 1354 in place of a 1350 IMO is like beating a dead horse. So, I plan to keep my 1350 and continue with my square shaft idea while also adding a fork spring from a motorcycle in between the the halves of the shafts! If I do it correctly, the spring will keep pressure on the factory slip yoke and stop it from "falling" throughout the entire cycle of the shaft!
My plan is to attach the smaller square shaft to the splined end of my current shaft and box up the end that slides into the larger piece. Boxing the end wont leave the spring anywhere to go, giving the spring something to press against. Just drop the spring in the lower half, press the two halves together and voila!
Even if I have to go and find a 1354 due to this idea not working, I still plan to build square shafts so this project isn't in vain; just curious to see if this could be a cost-effective alternative. Ebay, Craigslist and a local motorcycle wrecking yard seem to be a decent place to start for the spring. I will post pics and details as I start... I still have to get the D44 in place!
