Surprised "just pop in a AWD T-case" is a not a more common suggestion. I had a Safari van with it. Was ok.. not for rock crawling but ok for winter driving.

Not for a 4x4 truck. I would rather have to stop, open a cover, manually push the gears around, wipe the oil from my hands and resume driving. On a passenger car, for better road driving, ok.

I'm coming from the viewpoint of a 2000 4x4 with live hubs. when in 2wd they are worse than an actual 2wd.

Because usually AWD is just AWD and has neither locking or low range.

PJToledo - how is a 4x4 in 2wd worse than a 2wd?
I have heard people say it before too. Possibly because the front is heavier and harder for the rear to push.

Or because you get into a situation needing 4wd thinking it is there and it isn't.

I have never had 4wd denied to me so I really can't speak to it. :dntknw:

I just prefer to have more positive, personal control over what is or isn't receiving power at any particular point in time.

As I said, for a regular car on the road, AWD is ok, though i want the option to turn "traction control" on or off. I work at a BMW manufacturing plant and have driven 7 or 8 high end vehicles with AWD ( we call ours "x-drive") and they were a dream in all road conditions. But off-road i want personal manual control of my vehicle.

Isn't that Subaru's Big Marketing PL, all wheel drive? My AWD van was great in the snow and mud it was certainly not able to do traditional off-road type activities. I seriously doubt it could pull itself out of any kind of sugar sand or mud. On the other hand, the few times I've used true 4 wheel drive with my Ranger I was absolutely pleased and amazed at how great it is and understand now, how easy it is to get in trouble when the weather is bad, because you want to go out there and use it!

To get back to the topic,
operating transfer case mechanically from within the cab.


It occurred to me the 270 degree rotation can be done with a cable but it would have to wrap around a wheel like object not too different from the shiftster. the trouble at the other end would be the length of said cable. Now if that cable end in the cab had a lever or wheel that and gave it a larger ratio it could move the 270 degrees with maybe half of that. Now how do we return this back to 2wd? Another cable or a Big Spring? LOL that paragraph, brings us back to the beauty of the flexible shaft.
