I just bought a 1980 GMC/Grumman van with a 350ci on propane. It's running well but I don't know how much fuel is in the tank. I checked the wire from tank to dash by eyeball and see no problems. I'm going to check the dash gauge tonight by putting 12 volts to the terminal. How can I check the gauge on the tank? I went to a propane place and got a quote of C$70.00 for a new sender. I want to make sure mine is toast first. I have access to a multi-meter, both digital and analogue, and can follow simple directions.
Thanks,
Richard

The tank sender uses magnetic to sense the float level. There is no hole in the tank for the sender. Much less likely to have an accidental explosion with propane compared to gasoline. As an aside, I just watched a friend get burned while trying to start an old carb truck when pouring gas down the carb. 3rd degree burns to his hand but after a week the fingers look very good. Stop, drop and roll works....

Also, if I understood the dirctions properly when I ground one prong to the other on the sender the gauge should read full and when not grounded should read empty.

I've been around fuels all my life liquid and vaporous, you name it I've been around it, trust me when I say " be careful"! Overconfidence is the biggest killer,. Kind of like the guy that says "jack stands? don't need no jack stands I got a brand new Jack!".

What about the guy who says "Jack stands, I don't need jack stands, I have chunks of 2x4!"
