Hey everyone,

I have a 2003 Ranger with the 4.0L SOHC V6 that died.

I know replacing with same year engine is best, but if I couldn't find an engine in the same year, which later (2004 up) engines are compatible with a swap?

Would a newer, 2011 engine be a direct bolt-in swap, or what factors would need to be considered?

Thank you in advance for any help.

I think you should be good with any SOHC 4.0. Not 100% positive though.

They are all the same basic long block. Only the intake and exhaust manifolds changed form year to year or model to model.

I would look for nothing older than 05, since that is when the timing chain issue got sorted, and then grab the lowest miles engine you can find. Swap your intake and exhaust manifolds on as needed, and have fun.
