So just curious, my Dad has a 94 Ranger 4.0 Auto. No matter what you do it will not rev past 4000 in gear, even to the carpet from and stand still and going through the gears. Just wondering if any one else has seen this or if this is even normal.

Checked it she's getting wide open throttle, TPS voltage is correct and everything thing else looks good. I just find it weird...

Couple of things

Yes, Google: Ranger throttle cable Mod

Simple fix when you loose full throttle

Neutral switch(NSS) on transmission.
The shifter on transmission must be in Park or Neutral for starter motor to work, this is done via the NSS, this switch also does Reverse lights, just FYI

When trans is in Park or Neutral the Computer ALSO gets this signal, this enables the REV Limiter, prevents over REVing when NOT in gear.
If some one BY-PASSED this switch, to get starter to work, then computer thinks transmission is ALWAYS in Park or Neutral :)
So you always have REV Limiter ON

Look here: http://www.auto-diagnostics.info/ford_eec_iv

Check out pin 30, Neutral 0V-0.1V, In gear 5Volts

Just curious, why do you want to take a 4.0 OHV engine past 4,000 rpm? Horsepower and torque should be beyond peak at that point. Time to shift.

It's not that I want to rev it any higher, it's just like I said I find it weird the ECU doesn't let it rev higher in gear. 4k for a gas( Even for being a push rod engine) seems low.

My credo
To each his own.
Love my high revving 3.slow. It will max out the tach if I want (6K) except in park or neutral, then it's 3K. Can't seem to hurt the old bitch. Speed limiter at 91 MPH, but why should I care ? I never go faster than 74, except during an occasional Italian Tune-Up LOL

My credo
it is easier to fix and understand than "her"
there certainly are times to rev a 4.0 past 4k.

and you have to when it is one of those times.

bad switch will do it though.

on edit....if its running out of fuel from bad pump or filter it will do that too.
