Hey, Not sure if any can help me but i am having an issue with my 98 ranger 3.0L. the engine responds fine when i am accelerating but when I take my foot of the gas and toss it in neutral or push clutch in to switch gears it hold the rpm's at that point. If I am slowing down and I put it in neutral then they stay there until I stop, once I stop they drop right away. It does not happen all the time, it might not do it for a few days then for like an hour or so it will constantly have the issue. It has had this issue since I got it a few years ago but never really bothered to look into it. It only has about 87,000 miles on it and ive recently changed the air filter and spark plugs. There are no engine codes on the truck other then an O2 sensor code. If anyone could give me a had that would be great.

Thanks
Lucas

Welcome to TRS :)

Well there is an emission software in the computer that should hold RPMs for 5 seconds or so when shifting.
And RPMs should only drop to about 1,000 until speed is below 5mph, then it will drop down to normal idle levels.

This is all done using the IAC(idle air control) valve, if it seems more excessive on yours then I would clean it, not hard to do.

What is the O2 sensor code?
Anytime a sensor is mentioned in a code explanation then you can bet that sensor is working perfectly, or there wouldn't be a code because a bad sensor couldn't "see" a problem, lol.

Trouble codes are a tricky thing, the codes that are NOT there are just as important as the code that is there.
Say there are 30 codes that have O2 sensors mentioned in the explanation(FYI, there are more than 30), why did computer use that "one" code, and not another one.

Like Ron said, the code from a sensor is telling you something is beyond the computer's ability to adjust for, not that the sensor is bad (however it could be). Most reported codes are from the sensor doing its job properly and letting you know something is out of wack.

Anyway, what is the code/s??
