I've looked everywhere including this forum and other sites. I cannot seem to find the blower resistor on my 86 2.9l 4x4. Is it under the hood or behind the dash?

Under the hood, in the back, passenger side, in the air box on the firewall. Square plug by the blower motor.

Yes, you can recognize it by the square plug with four wires running out of it...usually orange, black, yellow and red...but they can vary...

Thought I had a picture...wrong connector...

Anyway...you may find it a bit difficult to separate the resistor from the connector...be gentle...it's 30 year old plastic and can easily break. Best to squirt it with something to lubricate if it is stuck...the way some were mounted (F-150 uses the same plug and connector with different colors) they are slightly turned away from direct hits of moisture so they actually come apart very easily.

Thanks!! If I'm reading this correctly, I'll need to remove the air box to gain access to the blower resistor. Hopefully, this solves the issue with my A/C only working on High.

If the air box is on the passenger side and close to the blower motor on the firewall then you may need to remove it...I remember taking a blower motor out of a 3.0 and it was tight with the air box on the passenger side...you might want to consider picking up a spare blower motor also if you have a place to store them...

I kept the one out of my old truck when I swapped the 96 box into my 88 cab...they don't usually blow but when they do...good to have a working spare ready to drop in...especially if it blows in the winter...
