Will the driveshafts from an 01 extended cab ranger with a 3.0 automatic 4x4 work on a 96 extended cab ranger with a 4.0 automatic 4x4?

Yes. Trimming of the fuel tank skid plate may be required.

I don't think it is a one piece but my driveshaft is so rusty I am worried about everyday safety and the possibility of mine being out of balance it is so corroded.

They used a 2 piece through 97 so that 01 should be a 1 piece. If memory serves me correctly you might get away without trimming the skid plate as long as your just driving it on the road. Its when you start flexing it out that it becomes a problem.

Even then so I just removed mine. And I know some other members that wheel harder than I do that don't run the fuel tank skid plate.

Its pretty thick material so it takes more than a sawzall to cut.

Also ford does make a special socket for the drive lines. I didn't use it but it was a pain with out it. Try and get a buddy to help you. You'll have to put it in neutral and then back in gear like 30 times.

The skid plate only becomes an issue if you end up with an aluminum shaft, because they are so big around. The steel ones are the same diameter as the two-piece.

There is atleast a 1/4 inch difference. You can see it without the tape measure. And that is not a aluminum shaft. It just bolted in the aluminum shaft needs adapters.

My skid plate just fell apart when I took it out it was so rusty so I'm gonna use skid plate off the 01 anyway.
