I was in the middle of a 4.0 SOHC swap in my 2000 Ranger until I found out the complete bottom end was screwed. Now I've seen it online where they're trying to put a new 5.0 in a 2011 Ranger. I am interested in this swap but don't have the cash to drop on the swap so I'm trying to do some homework. Besides upgrading steering, suspension, rear end, what else would I need to beef up? All of this will be completed way before the motor swap. I don't want to run a body lift so i think a 5.0 n/a would clear with a fiberglass hood. The 5.0 also is in trucks so I can get the automatic transmission. I would imagine a custom drive shaft behind it and I'd drop my rear end gearing from 4.10 to 3.73 or whatever is stock for that motor. Any other thoughts? I'm not familiar with the wiring harness and that this is a new idea for a swap regarding the cost n technical issues.

Not only is it out of your budget ( about $11k from summit), it will take extensive mods under the hood, custom wiring, driveshaft mods, frame stiffening, etc. It would be much more economical for you to do a v8 swap from a 99-01 explorer and within your budget...

Well weight is an issue with those 2000 5.0s and they only came with a 4 speed

Believe it or not weight is not an issue. The coyote is actually lighter than the pushrod 302, which is only about 75 lbs heavier than the 4.0. It's the power output the coyote makes (450+ HP) that requires frame stiffening...

As far as trannies, there have been quite a few TRS guys that have used the M5OD-R2 from a 97 4.2l f150...manuals can be used...

I definitely understand the new 5.0 almost doubles the 2000 gen. I would certainly have the chassis stiffened with strut support. I just like the idea of 400+hp stock on natural aspiration.

Right now I have a 3.0, the 4.0 SOHC has nearly same hp as the 5.0 with a 5 speed automatic rather than the 4. I know there torque is less but i could regear to compensate for that

You shouldn't need to stiffen the frame at all. I had my 331 in my 89 with a similar output and it was fine with the 400+HP . As for the 5.0 fitting, it's overall length is shorter than a pushrod 5.0, so it will fit. The width was never an issue in a V8 Ranger swap, other than fitting headers. The price of a Coyote swap is the killer, unless you can grab one from a wrecked vehicle fairly cheap.

Yeah, the power is definitely worth the swap, but like baddad said, its a pricey swap...

I would like to see direct injection technology in some of the older cars.I think the hot rods will make the instal first. The coyote will ever be cheap to buy or even affordable. It's going to take some expensive aftermarket support to deal with the complexities of direct injection.Kinda like what it takes to put in a late model diesel into a older vehicle.

It's probably cause i'm older but the V6 310 HP getting about 24to 26 miles to the gallon sounds even better than the V8.You guys are right though 5 liters naturally aspirated Mustang does mid 12 second quarter miles all day long.

Compared to:

I dunno, if I had the bucks and the room I would rather go with the new 5.0, me also wonders if the plug and play pack keeps it to the Mustangs 412hp mark or if it has a different tune...

The "BOSS 302" is 12grand, not much more power just at a higher RPM. I would pass on that critter for sure.

The new 5.0 is still indirect injected, I don't know if you were refering to it or just making a statement. It does have bases already in the heads to upgrade to DI but IMO they are saving that until GM comes up with a way to counter what they have already :icon_twisted:

My brother's 412hp 2011 Mustang with a slightly more aerodynamic shape than any RBV, 6 spd manual with 3.73 gears was putting down 27-28mpg on a road trip last fall. Not bad at all IMO running 70-75mph. It just turned over 5000 miles last week, I don't know what the "break in" time is on these new engines but I doubt it is fully broken in yet.

Phenominal engine, I can't wait until the '11 F-150's get a couple years on them so I can afford one. :D
