'85 Ranger LWB originally had a 2.8, something like a 17 gal fuel tank.

When it is full it reads full, when it is anywhere else it can say anything else. I might go to the store on E, to the bank on half a tank, drive somewhere else on a quarter and then when I pull into the station on E put 5 gallons in it and we are good to go and back on F. It can lie to you about being on E but when it is empty it won't lie that isn't on E (it won't say it has half a tank when it is empty but it may say you are out when you have half a tank)

It has always been flakey but when I drove it a lot it wasn't a big deal because I could remember when I filled it, now that it isn't my primary it is hard to keep track of it.

I can't find a new sender listed anywhere for anything carbureted. Is there any fixing to these senders and/or a way to adapt something else?

Similar issue for my 1985 Bronco II...I refuse to drive a tank of gas past about 230 miles because I have no idea how close I really am...supposedly a 23 gallon tank but I don't know.

I wonder if I were to replace this part if it would give me an accurate fuel gauge readout?

Mechanical Pump

Delphi sets itself apart from the fuel pump competition with three words: fast pressure rise. As the OE, Delphi knows how to restore fast-pressure performance and system integrity translating to better pumping through less energy. Our pumps are designed to operate under extreme temperatures, quick engine starts and to avoid low-fuel hesitation, including alcohol fuels and blends.
Features

Increased durability and enhanced stability due to internal springs preventing fuel tube chafing
Better security and durability with multiple redundant buttons on the fuel level sensor
Improved durability with steel plated, all metal internal components
Large volume reservoir maintains sufficient fuel in low fuel situations and vehicle cornering
Longer pump life as a result of a two-strainer system keeping out contaminates
Lower failure rates due to its innovative design and durability.
Reduced potential for greenhouse gas emissions via the EVAP system because of integrated OE fuel vapor pressure sensor.
Guaranteed correct gas gauge reading :icon_thumby:

85_Ranger4x4,
How did you make out on this.

I had the same problem with my ’88 STX.
Turned out to be the sending unit, was bad.

After I put in the 5.0L EFI the gas gauge was going all over the place.
It was hard enough to determine the gas use of the new engine without a F’d up gas gauge.
I put in after market gauges designed for the Ford sender and the same thing.

Someone suggest I look at the sender and it got replaced and I was all set.

This is an older thread but was just reading through.
