I have a pickup box trailer made from the back half of an '86 Ranger and I have a old hydraulic dump barge wagon the floor is out of and the steering is shot... and had the brain fart to put the hoist from that under the bed of the Ranger.

Any ideas for a hinge at the back? Am I going to need some kind of subframe under the box so I don't fold it in half?

My credo
In theory, theory and practice are the same. In practice, they are different.
I would say yes to building a frame under the bed. The hinge doesn't have to be complicated. Bronze bushings and a large pin would work. Next time you pull up behind a normal dump truck at a traffic light, study it momentarily. There isn't much to it. Just make sure it's all built strong enough. Hydraulic stuff is powerful. It will bend things easily.

I would build the frame WITH the hinge and mount bed to that

We have been using a different wagon to clean out my barn, mainly ground cobs and old hay. Works sweet but is a pain to back up. I thought for future projects converting my pickup trailer would be nice.

My current wagon just has two 2x6's (may be 2x8) under the wooden deck that the hoist lifts on and that it hinges on at the back.
