Here's what I got. 89 ranger xlt ext cab 2.9 4x4 automatic

Here's what's new...or rebuilt...

Rebuilt engine. Less thank 500 miles
Rebuilt trans & t-case
New injectors
New map sensor
New 02 sensor
New fuel pump
New radiator
Cat cut off
Most sensors are new...I've done so much to it that I forget stuff...

Has good fuel pressure.

The guy it was bought from cut the wiring harness in half and butt connectors to put it back together. I started soldering them back together where they go and then shrink tubing them.

Anyways it starts hard most of the time and it will only run so long until it dies.
After it dies I have to crank on it for a minute to get it to start. Then it blows black smoke Like a diesel. And doesn't wanna move very well...

Any ideas or things to try or check...

black smoke tells me that it is running very rich. any codes? Check the wiring harness to the O2 sensor and the injectors. Make sure the Fuel Pressure Regulator is working. Even with new injectors, you might have one or two that are sticking open.

check the oil, does it smell like gasoline?

Yea if the FPR is on its way out it will dump raw fuel right into the intake, rear two cylinders usually get the most.

I've been thru 2 or 3 regulators (bad from factory) and I finally got a good one...
The wiring to the 02 sensor is good...just redid all of that in the summer...

Sometimes the truck misses for some reason and I can't quite time it exact with a light due to the miss...

And the oil smells as it should...

And the only codes I pulled was system pass and low voltage for something...which I would imagine is the hacked wire I haven't fixed yet...

And does anyone know what the 1 exposed wire is for? I've heard its exposed for a reason.

Raw fuel in the oil is not always the fault of an FPR

I had a 2.9 a decade or so ago that killed itself because of an aftermarket
rebuilt distributor.

The wire between the pickup coil and the connector body was too long
and looped up and the reluctor drum was slowly sawing it's way through
the wire.

But because on fords like most things are controlled by switching the ground
this cause the tach to be sometimes erratic, but sometimes the tach behaved
normally.. a 50mile drive would increase the "oil" level in the pan by >2quarts.

By the time I finally diagnosed the problem the damage was done,
but also by that time I had switched mental modes to actively TRYING to "blow"
that particular engine.

At the time I had three or four spares and had another one prepped and
ready to drop in at literally a moments notice.
