I want to update the 4.0 Page in the Technical Library in the coming month(s).

The page is a few years old and I'm not sure how accurate the info is anymore. If you have ANY suggestions as to what should be added, changed or deleted from the page, please post them here. This includes part numbers, names of manufacturers, links, custom modifications, know problems or even cheap tricks.

Thanks.

Just thinking off hand I would say that under the ignition section there should be a link about the EDIS distributorless ignition system explaining how this system works and possibly a diagram. Also, I would expand the electrical diagrams section as it just has a limited amount of information.

I for one would love to see more fuel system info, pressures, how it works, etc.

I don't know if it would belong in the 4.0L tech, but I would love to see a non-biased review of the different 4.0L variants (OHV, SOHC).

For example, I currently have the OHV version, and could tell just about anybody willing to sit down what I love about this engine, but I don't really know squat about the SOHC (reliability, usable power, towing ability) in relationship to it's OHV cousin. I think that a good comparison from someone who's had both would be benificial.

I will be doing a search soon to see if anyone has any strong opinions about the SOHC because I'm thinking of updating to a '02 4WD, and would like some good opinions before getting out of my comfort zone. Obviously, the truck in my sig has given me more that it's share of service, but I'd like to have something that doesn't need a major repair ever year around January 15th, when it's 20 degrees out ;)

just a few ideas

I'd like to see more on the newer variants. I have a 2002 FX4 with the 4.0 and 97,000 miles on it. How about a re-build thread for each engine variant? Experiences from the guys who've gone before. How about, then, a performance modification thread for each variant? Then a thread on removal and replacement and sources of parts.

I'm pretty pissed right now that mine runs so good yet I have to pull it if I want it to stop dripping oil from the rear (either the pan or rear main seal). I'd really like it if someone had a trick up their sleeve.

Thanks

Looks like it is kind of short on SOHC info. More of that would be nice!

Just looking at the post on spark plugs - it would see like we should get someone from one of the big engine builders or maybe even a spark plug company to talk in technical terms about spark plugs. bill53 made a similar point but he is talking about a basic - what plugs in where and works. I'd suggest a full technical article about spark plugs in general.

Hello Jim,

Just recently returned to TRS after short absence.
Saw your call for comments on updating tech pages.

More ignition info is a must.
I posted a thread back in the summer about different
length spark plugs in older and newer 4.0's. Later I saw
posts from people damaging new plugs.
Issues like this will become more frequent as manufacturers
plan to discontinue parts for the older engines.
