Hey, guys.

So I just picked up a ’92 Ranger Custom 4x4. Plenty of issues, including a bad vibration somewhere toward the rear (but that’s a discussion for another thread). While trying to diagnose the above, I noticed the item shown in the photos below. I’m at a bit of a loss as to what it is. Speed sensor for 4WD LOW maybe?

As you can see, it’s located right next to the yoke on the rear differential, a little before the pumpkin. There’s a wire (broken and hanging) that looks like it used to be connected to the item in question. Tracing the wire back, it goes up and through the floorboards into the cab area.

Anyone know what this thingy is? :icon_confused: Thanks!

PS - Sorry about the links. I’m not sure how to imbed pics directly into a thread.

No idea, other than it won't be for 4x4.
WAG; some type of rpm sensor.

My credo
In theory, theory and practice are the same. In practice, they are different.
Interesting. I agree with alwaysfloored. It appears to be a proximity switch being used to read rpm. Is there an aftermarket cruise control installed?

Second thought....

Its a magnetic driveshaft sensor for aftermarket cruise. I had an aerostar for a few months that had one
