I am in the process of planning my clutch job on my 87' Bronco II. I would like to do the 4.0 upgrade. From my reading I think I understand what parts I need, but want to double check one thing. From what I understand, my stock bell housing will work with the upgraded over-size parts? Sorry if the answer has been posted elsewhere on this forum, but I haven't seen it if it has.

What I've read was they'll work but some rub on the new flywheel. In other words bolt it in then turn over the motor by hand and make sure it clears. If it doesn't take it off and grind the spot a little if it does start putting the transfer case in.

While I've never attempted to do the 4.0 Flywheel & clutch upgrade on an '87 a 2.9 with the '87 transmission, I know enough people who have done it and failer to report any major issues....

The one good thing is that on the '87 trans you can do your trial fitting with the bell housing off the trans.. this is a good thing because a magnesium bell housing is a hell of a lot easier to lift into place with the 75# trans sitting on the floor out of the way....

But you also need a 4.0 Manual trans starter with the 4.0 flywheel and clutch.

And the 2.9 Dust shield (the thin aluminum plate between the engine and trans) does not work well with the 4.0 flywheel

nor does the aluminum one from a 4.0 Auto setup.

The 4.0 manual dust plate is made of steel

from what I read on the conversion articles you can use the 87 drivetrain, but it will run into issues of bearings going in the trans, and t case due to it not being designed to take the stress of the extra torque from the 4.0L .

The recommended idea being to swap the drive train that goes with a 4.0L
