Hello everyone I'm new here to the forum. Have a semi general question about my ranger. I recently got it off the original owner about 2 maybe 4 months ago truck is bone stock. CEL came on few days after but pushed it off. Since I bought it I noticed it ran a little rough during idle. While driving last month I noticed the evap pump would turn on making the truck sputter and then the pump would shut off and truck would run fine. Pulled the harness on the pump to keep it from turning on and truck runs good during normal driving conditions. However it still runs a little rough during idle. Truck gets great gas mileage between 23 and 30. Today I ran eec check and came up with code 41 running rich at least that's the code I think I'm getting as I'm new to the flash stile codes normally do OBD2 or 1. Not sure how to go about chasing the issue to this code, I searched around a bit some people say it's issues with all kinds of stuff based on their condition of their vehicle running really bad. My truck doesn't run that bad knock on wood. I have a video of the code if anyone wants to make sure I'm reading it correctly. Any and all help is greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Welcome to TRS :)

Can you tell us what Ranger you have?
Year
2wd or 4x4
Engine size, 4.0l was only available starting in 1990, so not an 1989
Manual or automatic trans

Code 41 would indicate a 1994 or earlier Ranger

23MPG would indicate a 4cyl engine, 2.3l Lima engine, you have posted in the 4.0l section

It's a 1989 Ranger 6cld manual trans m5od 2wd

I'm pretty sure it's a 4.0 but just ran the VIN and it says it's 3L

3.0l wasn't available in Rangers until 1991

Use this VIN decoder: http://www.therangerstation.com/tech_library/VIN_Codes.shtml

8th digit in VIN tells you the factory engine option

And double check YEAR, 10th VIN position 1989 = K

In 1989 there were only 2 engine options
2.3l 4cyl VIN A
2.9l V6 VIN T

Maybe previous owner swapped in a 4.0l engine, it was a popular swap

2.9l V6 looks like this: http://therangerstation.com/tech_library/2_9_Page.shtml

4.0l looks like this: http://therangerstation.com/tech_library/4_0_Page.shtml

2.3l looks like this: https://www.ericthecarguy.com/kunena/attachment/1806

3.0l looks like this:
3.0l also had valve covers with "3.0l V6" written on them
