Caution: May contain philosphically different opinions. Proceed at you're own risk.

I'd say most of that styling is function. Aerodynamics for better MPGs and a function of what people have come to expect in a new truck.

IMO lower MPGs is OK. I mean it's a truck not a prius! I'd rather have flat surfaces that are easy to attach things like oh say armor plating to.

But, for the masses today that would be what the 83 Ranger was for the masses of it's time.

It all about the times. And these times are filled with :idiot:s.

Aerodynamics?

More of this:

Less of this:

It can be done without making it look like a car.

My credo
I need more sleep.
This thing is still going. Well, here's my thinking. Ford is going to wait for the new Chevy Colorado to come out with its diesel and see how well it does. Then, possibly they are going bring back the Ranger with aluminum like the new F-150 will have. Combined with a small power diesel engine and super lightweight I think it would be 40mpg+. Of course they could just say fu and never bring it back until 2050 or something because they are out of ideas.

The lightweight aluminum body is an outright joke/scam.

They got the 700+/- difference that they plastered everywhere comparing a 2014 5.0 to 2015 2.7EB. A 2014 5.0 is about 27lbs heavier than a 2015 5.0 truck.

I have no idea what the big aluminum push is, it isn't because it is cheaper or easier to repair. 30lbs isn't worth it either. Methinks somebody's uncle works for Alcoa or something...

China has a surplus of aluminum since they are the world leader in aluminum production.

At least when you wreck a new F-150 you can just toss it in your aluminum can recycling box :).

Since it is a fairly hazardous material to refine that doesn't surprise me much. Most brake and clutch facings are made in China for the same reasons... it is a major PITA to safely produce them here.

I wonder if some states will charge a deposit when you buy one? :icon_twisted:

85_Ranger4x4:

Where are you getting the numbers for just 30 lbs difference?

Car and Driver's test of one of the 1st production trucks puts the difference between a 2014 EB SuperCrew Lariat 5.5' box and 2015 EB SuperCrew Platinum 6.5' box at 450lb; change the '15 to Lariat/5.5' and its close to 600lbs.

I'll down a couple BEvERageS to free up some aluminum for them.

Maybe Ford should have brought back the Courier. :icon_rofl:

http://www.tfltruck.com/2014/07/2015-ford-f-150-small-2-7l-ecoboost-but-monster-torque-preview/

This was a big hoo-raw awhile ago, more than one place should have it covered.

The '15 is the 2.7 Ecoboost, the '14 is a 5.0 V8 as evidenced by the center mounted front license plate (EB's have them offset for intercooler airflow) and lack of EB badging (there were more pics of the event somewhere that you could see that)

Between the 5.0 vs 2.7 AND the steel vs aluminum there is 700 and some odd pounds different between identical 4wd screw trucks. And nobody really seems to notice what really caused the weight loss...

My credo
I'm not afraid of dying, not living terrifies me!
My .02

If I am asking for a new ranger I'll simply go back to the start. Simple small trucks that are offered in trim levels from NOTHING to XLT. With choice of engine from gutless 4cyl to reasonable V6(okay maybe gimme a fire-breathing Eco-Boost). I have only bought one new vehicle in my life a '92 Ranger XLT. If they brought out a new Ranger that appealed to me I would look and consider. Until then I am satisfied driving my "Old junk, POS, that is unsafe because it is over 2yrs old"(X-MIL's statement). Now back to lurking.

With the cap that looks like a "crossover". Otherwise known as the unholy spawn of suvs and cars.
