After researching a ton and finding spotty information about putting a Taurus 3.0 into my 99 Ranger, I decided to pull the trigger and figure it out. Here's what I found swapping an '05 Flex fuel 3.0 from a Taurus into my '99 Flex Fuel 3.0 Ranger 4x4.
- From the Taurus motor you need to remove the upper/ lower intake, valve covers, oil pan, oil pump, windage tray, exhaust manifolds, all accessory mounts, motor mounts, oil pressure switch, dip stick flex plate and water pump. The timing chain cover can stay.
- Order a full gasket kit for a ranger, including head gaskets
- You should replace the head gaskets. The Taurus ones are different, and if you have the motor torn down this far, its a good idea anyway.
- Swap the upper/ lower intake, valve cover, oil pan, oil pump, exhaust manifolds, accessory mounts, oil pressure switch, dip stick, flex plate and motor mounts from the ranger motor on to the Taurus block. I bought a new Ranger water pump and installed, which I highly recommend. Poor cooling warps heads and blows head gaskets.
** Note- one unknown when I undertook the project was not knowing if I needed to replace the main bearing cap bolts out of the Taurus motor, which have studs for the windage tray mount. These studs clear the built in windage tray in the ranger pan just fine.
That's it! In my area running Ranger 3.0's cost $800-$1200 from the wrecking yards. I picked up my Taurus 3.0 for $250. I put about another $350 in to high quality gaskets, new water pump, new radiator and all new radiator/ heater hoses. All money well spent.
