After researching a ton and finding spotty information about putting a Taurus 3.0 into my 99 Ranger, I decided to pull the trigger and figure it out. Here's what I found swapping an '05 Flex fuel 3.0 from a Taurus into my '99 Flex Fuel 3.0 Ranger 4x4.

- From the Taurus motor you need to remove the upper/ lower intake, valve covers, oil pan, oil pump, windage tray, exhaust manifolds, all accessory mounts, motor mounts, oil pressure switch, dip stick flex plate and water pump. The timing chain cover can stay.

- Order a full gasket kit for a ranger, including head gaskets

- You should replace the head gaskets. The Taurus ones are different, and if you have the motor torn down this far, its a good idea anyway.

- Swap the upper/ lower intake, valve cover, oil pan, oil pump, exhaust manifolds, accessory mounts, oil pressure switch, dip stick, flex plate and motor mounts from the ranger motor on to the Taurus block. I bought a new Ranger water pump and installed, which I highly recommend. Poor cooling warps heads and blows head gaskets.

** Note- one unknown when I undertook the project was not knowing if I needed to replace the main bearing cap bolts out of the Taurus motor, which have studs for the windage tray mount. These studs clear the built in windage tray in the ranger pan just fine.

That's it! In my area running Ranger 3.0's cost $800-$1200 from the wrecking yards. I picked up my Taurus 3.0 for $250. I put about another $350 in to high quality gaskets, new water pump, new radiator and all new radiator/ heater hoses. All money well spent.

Just to add a note, the Taurus oilpan, and all of the related stuff like the oil pump, windage tray, etc can be used in a 98+ 2wd Ranger. It could very well be different in a 4wd truck of course, but it may save some people some time and effort if they read this in the future.

Im going to use a Engine out of a 2005 Taurus. My truck is a 2000 model 2 wheel drive. So are you saying I can leave the oil pan on the Taurus motor and it will fit into my truck?

Yes.

Change your head gaskets, and intake/exhaust manifolds. Everything else should fit. There is not a lot of clearance where the oil pan sits over the engine subframe crossmember, but the Taurus pan fits nicely. If you're super concerned, you can switch out to all of the Ranger stuff, but it isn't required.

Thanks for the info. If the Oil Pan will work then I figure there is no need to replace it. I need to get this truck back on the road. Need to get my other truck put back up

question for the O.P.
does the power and torque seem the same or different?
I would not be surprised if cams are different, altering the power curve to match each type of vehicle.
just curious

cams are a tiny bit different , the head gaskets are a must, water exits different, also head bolt sizes are different, 97 and later are longer an 10 mm and 96 and earlier are 11mm and shorter, order gaskets for a Ranger. my 98 has a 96 Taurus

When changing Head Gaskets I think you need to replace the Head Bolts as well. I think there only good for using one time only. Is this info correct?
