question about 05 fx4 tire size and gearing

Hey Guys
i am considering buying a 05 f-150 fx4 from a guy. i don't know what the gears are but i am pretty sure that they are stock (which i think is 3.73 for that truck)... he has been running 34.5" tires on this truck since he has owned it. he said, when he bought it, it had pretty close to the same size tires... the truck has 93000 miles on it. so lets just say this truck has been run for roughly 60000 miles with these 34.5" tires and stock gearing. my question is... will i be replacing the trans, u-joints, or really anything in the drivetrain any time soon? thanks

i think anytime you replace your stock tires with bigger ones your bound to break some thing if your off roading... unless you upgrade to beefier parts..

Well I'm not really worried about breaking anything. I am really wondering if the bigger tires with stock gears may have caused premature wear on the trans. I just don't want to have to rePlace a worn out trans in 20000 miles because of the previous owner running 35's with stock gears.

Its not as hell on that particular truck as others 3.73's and 35's would be similar to stock tires and 3.27's which is commonly sold on those trucks.

it's most likely 4.10's to be honest, ford loves 4.10's and uses them on lots of vehicles... including my dad's 2wd 150...

no, i wouldn't worry about it wearing out from the tire size alone... if he abused it in the bush, you need to worry... but the same would go if he had stock size tires

i've got 33's on everything stock on my truck, which is a much bigger jump in size from his stock to his current, i've been running this for 2-3 years now, and all i've worn out were 2 wheel bearings, and 2 upper ball joints (each replaced once) bearings (hubs) are about $60 for my truck, and uca's were about the same, online

With 3.31's and 32's it is not that fun on the highway (with a 2v 5.4)

I really do not like driving on the highway with that combo.

It has two valves per cylinder as opposed to the later (and OP's) that had 3 valves per cylinder (aka 3v)

that would be a 16v and 24v

2v refers to 2 venturis which means it's a 2 barrel carb

Sorry, that isn't how it is done with the mods. 2 valve, 3 valve or 4 valve is how they are commonly seperated. I don't think I have ever heard anybody doing it the other way with a modular engine.

It is generally understood that unless someone has more money than brains they are fuel injected and it is obviously not refering to a carburetor.

Actually they didn't even offer 4.10's in the F150's for 2005-200? I have one the FX4 axles sitting in my garage right now after swapping a customers out.

No ford modular motors are called 2, 3 and 4 valves. They are called that by all modular motor guys and the ford literature.

The HD F-150 based trucks could be had with 4.10's, either called F-250LD 97-98, F-150 7700 99-03. I think they still make the goofy seven lug things, I saw one at u-pull-it in the 04-08 bodystyle but I didn't see any special badging on it.

I don't think they made a FX4 with the seven lug package though, if they did I have never seen one.

Otherwise I think the FX4's just got 3.73's and 31" tires.

The 7700's also didn't have a sterling 9.75 they had the semi-float 10.25. Completely different trucks for parts they go as far as to have the tranny crossmembers in different spots, the HD tranny and like you said 4.10's. I guess I should have been more specific all normal F150's without the 7700 GVWR package only go as deep as 3.73's.

if anyone cares, i bought the truck :yahoo:

... it seems to be really well taken care of. the carfax showed up to be perfectly clean... no wrecks or major repairs. Just routine maintenance. i'll post some pics soon.

here is the pics. let me know what ya'll think... oh and it does have 3.73 gears... it feels like it has good power even with the bigger tires but i may move to 4.56 gears (if i ever get a boat one day).
