First stop on my list would be trailer light connector, loads of DIY butchering done back there :)

Yes, could be Ground issue, any light that comes on means power is passing thru the filament, so if one circuit has a bad ground it will use another ground that may pass thru another bulb.
But that bulb would be dimmer, not full ON brightness

Multi-function switch has both turn and brake light power

Turn on Parking lights and see if other lights are "glowing"

driving with the headlights off the brake lights work fine but when the headlights are on the brakelights don't seem to work that's when the turnsignal lights work

For what little it is worth on my '85 the tail lights ground to the dash support by the fuse panel, there is no ground on the outside of the cab for the back end of the truck. Tails, brake/signal, backups, and fuel gauge all ground to the same wire.

'01 is probably different but that is how they did it in '85. If you get on ebay and find an EVTM they lay stuff out pretty decent so you know what you are looking for.

For my debacle I started at the back and ran a jumper ground wire straight to the negative post on the battery. I would unpin the ground from the first connector in the rear lamp harness I found and run it to my known "good" ground. When it checked out I would reassemble that one and move forward to the next one and keep working my way to the front until I found the problem.
