I would like to a 302 swap in my Ranger. I do not have PATS on it currently so I guess a 96-97 Expo 5.0 engine and auto trans should work, 2wd of course. So here is the list I have so far......

1) 96-97 Expo 5.0 motor w/ harness and ecu
2) 96-97 Expo Auto trans

I am not sure if there any newer Rangers, none that I have seen at least, like mine that have done the swap. Any info would be greatly appreciated. :headbang::icon_hornsup:

What makes you believe you do not have PATS on a 2005? Is yours an all metal key or does it have a large plastic head like most new ones. Also be advised that if your state does emissions testing, most states require model year or new motor for swaps. At the least you'd want to look for 99-01 explorer as the ecu would be full OBDII as well.

Little known secret but the '05' do not have PAT's on any of the engines, I've had two of them. Even the '98' without PAT's had a plastic part but were a lot smaller. Isn't the 96-97 Explorer a full OBDII system? Only thing I ever saw that might be a problem is the incompatable ABS systems and I've been looking for that info. Easy to wire around I guess but not as easy as the '98-2000' Rangers.

What would be the PATS portion of my is nice and slim. The state of IN does not require an emissions testing. :yahoo::headbang:

I have actually already located a donor 96 2wd Exploder for $750. allnpt0 is going to helping me out with this. He has done several V8 Rangers. I am really excited about this. :headbang:

Only thing I'd start thinking about is the exhaust manifold/headers you want to run. Having the Edge (no pun intended), the Explorer mounts should work just fine.

The PCM calibration in the 96~98 5.0 Explorer is set up for a "return" fuel system and 30~45 PSI vacuum regulated fuel pressure. This system has a fuel supply line and a return line that dumps excess fuel from the fuel rail regulator back to the tank.

The 99+ Explorer and 98+ Ranger (except some FFV's) use a constant pressure mechanical "returnless" fuel system that runs at about 65 PSI. These returnless systems use a single fuel line going forward to the engine compartment and the pressure regulation is done inside the fuel tank.

Using the factory 96~97 Ex engine/trans/PCM would mean converting the 05 Ranger to return fuel by adding a return line back to the tank. This is not impossibly difficult but it would be necessary to make it run correctly.

So could I use 99+ Expo fuel rails to work around that then? Would those rails fit a 96-97 5.0 motor? I think they would but would like clarification before I hunt them down. Thanks for the info by the way.

EDIT:
Or could I just get the 99+ ECM and rails but keep the same motor?

If you use the 99~01 fuel rails, then you need the 99~01 PCM and all the other pieces that are different - injectors, CMP sensor, MAF sensor, engine harness, transmission, transmission harness, etc. The 99+ PCM also means that you get PATS unless you redo the factory PCM calibration to eliminate it.

Running the fuel return is no big deal. I just tapped into the smaller filler neck tube for simplicity.

Any progress on getting the Explorer donor that we talked about?

Yeah I got the EVTM. Thanks. I will put it to good use.

I need to find another complete donor for the transplant. Pete, you got any idea on where I could got one on the cheap like the one I found before he fixed it.
