Thought while I'm removing the intake manifold to send out my injectors for cleaning I might as well replace the valve cover gasket(s).

Fel-Pro lists the gasket as well as a grommet set of eight. My FSM does not reference any grommets in the valve cover section.

Can someone tell me what these might be for and if I'll need them - and if I need just eight for both covers or 2x 8.

Thanks.

Ford generally doesn't think of the grommets in the valve covers as a serviceable item, but aftermarket companies like Fel-Pro do make them, and they can be replaced.

You will probably need 16 total, as I believe there are 8 bolts in each cover.

Grommets as I know them are for wires going thru a firewall. What is a grommet used for in this case?

Yes, on closer inspection I can just see the edges of "grommets" under the cover bolt heads. So yes, I will need 16 for both sides.

Thanks

Same idea, different application. On some later engine designs Ford used rubber grommets to help seal the holes for valve cover bolts.

On the 4.0 set I just did, the felpro kit came with Orings that look like figure 8s. I couldn't figure out where they went for the life of me. They were for newer intakes that are plastic. My intake was cast aluminum. So I pitched them. They definitely had me head scratching for a while. I am not sure if this is the same on 3.0s.
