I have an 89 BII and tomorrow I am going to pick up a 96 explorer, 2door, 4.0 automatic, 4x4, 3.73 limited slip rear. He says everything works (pw,pdl, etc) and it runs great.

It was his daily driver until the transmission started slipping and he limped it to his house and parked it yesterday. Heres the big question...what all can I transfer over to the BII (front axle, rear axle, 4.0, radiator?) or would I be better off replacing the trans in the explorer and selling it? Or could this be easier to take my 5 speed trans/transfer case/pedals and put it on the explorer? I need some advice :)

I am picking the explorer up for 500.

Anything is possible with enough time/money/skills... Front axle, no. Rear axle, yes if the spring perches are flipped and shock mount are added. The motor will swap, you'll need to do some wiring though. The radiator will swap too, though you may need to do some work to mount it, I can't remember.

Damn, I was hoping the front axle would swap out as well. Wrong year I assume?

In 95 the Explorers switched from TTB to IFS, so you're out of luck there.

96 ex's have true IFS, not ttb. you'll need to find a ttb front axle for it.
but everything else, yes. motor/t-case/driveshafts(if modified)/rear axle/radiator.. and i strongly reccomend the 4.0 swap, notice my name on here? lol. the 4.0 and a b2 is freaking amazing! and legoms is gonna be selling some 3.73 d35 ttb gears soon, so pick those up-- find you a d35 ttb in a junk yard w/ manual hubs-- and you'll have the gears and front axle you need also

mix in some xj lift coils up front, a good steering setup, lengthen your stock radius arms-- and the other odds and ends, and you'll have a nice set up!

I assume the 4.0 would bolt up to my 5 speed trans, any advice on putting the 5 speed/transfer case in the explorer?

Since I cant use the front axle, I'm debating on whether its worth the 500 now. My front and rear is shot.

its well worth the 500 if you wanna do a 4.0 swap and a rear 31 spline 8.8 swap. and its already 3.73's which are a lot better than the usual 3.27 crap. after the 500 ex all you'll need to find is a front axle.

The tranny will swap no problem, but some people say the FM146 won't last behind the 4.0. A few have run them without problem though, so if you don't beat on it too hard, you should be fine. I think the A4LD auto may be a different length though.

Sounds like you'd be better off using a 91-94 Explorer.

if you want a full donor a 91-94 is better since its ttb front end, and that's the 4.0 wiring setup most of the write-ups on here are done w/

personally, like i said-- if you wanna do a 4.0, bw1354 t-case, and 8.8 swap(31 spline) on your b2. its still probably worth the 500. if you just wanted axles-- maybe just check the prices at your local junkyard on just axles.

remember at a JY you need wiring, computer, and all for a 4.0 swap.

At pull a part you would be well over $500 just in the rear and engine w/ the wire harness everything else you need. I would go for it

FM146 and A4LD are the same length.

Sounds like I could swap in my FM146 and transfer case fairly easily and have it on the road. Would I need a different pcm since Im going from an auto to a 5 sp in the explorer?

Figure the engine and rear axle alone are a good deal at that price. Grab the rear springs too if you want to stay stock height.

Even without the engine and rear axle the Ex is still worth a couple hundred for scrap.
