I’m curious to see what oil and oil filter you guys are using in your trucks. I want to make sure I’m using what is best for this old engine!

I run Castrol high milage in my all my engines except the Explorer, and Motorcraft filters. The Explorer gets Motorcraft oil as well as the filter.

My credo
In theory, theory and practice are the same. In practice, they are different.
I run Castrol high mileage in the '93 Ranger, Rotella in the '85 Mercedes diesel and Mobil1 synthetic in the '14 Honda CRV. I haven't really settled on a favorite filter yet. But I try to go for the higher quality filters.

I have a friend who is a GM certified mechanic who swears by Napa gold filters.

There is a guy on the internet with a lot of info about oil and filters. Trying to remember the name. I think it's "Bob the oil guy" or something like that.

After a fresh rebuild with NOS lifters and cam, I am running Valvoline VR1 10W30. I read enough about flat tappet cam failures to scare me towards racing oil for the higher ZDDP levels.

I’m using motorcraft FL1A filters

Or diesel oil. It cleans great and has high zinc levels.

Interesting... i'm guessing 10w30 is safe to use? I consider you an expert so if you're using it then maybe I should too... :icon_confused:

I’m really not an expert in this area. I chose this oil as someone rebuilding an engine who was trying to avoid the horror stories he’d read of new cam failures of flat tappet cams with modern oils. I ran break-in oil for 20 minutes, Valvoline Race oil for the next 500, and put Valvoline Race oil in after that—700 miles on rebuild since startup in September.

Synthetic oils have a lot of advantages over conventional, and you’d likely be fine running in an established engine. When I tore my engine down, it was so filthy, worn, and the tolerances were so loose, I think the synthetic I had run in there was likely a waste of money.

After a rebuild, I run 10-30 any brand. Old engines I use 10-30 high mileage, again any brand on sale. I have up to 220,000 miles, mostly highway. I change oil & filters between 3 and 4 thousand miles.

I tore down a Ranger 2.8 after about 40,000 city miles that I did an overhaul on and there was very little wear. I used cheap filters and oil. Not necessarily the absolute cheapest, but not premium oil or filters.
