The transfer case is easy... ALL transfer cases in Ford Rangers use Automatic Transmission fluid...

The transmission is a bit harder to pin down because it depends entirely on which transmission your truck is equipped with

The Mazda built transmission (M5OD-R1) uses ATF, this transmission has an integral bell-housing

The Mitsubishi trans (FM146) has a removeable bellhousing and a sheet-steel bottom cover, this transmission uses 80w Gear oil.

+1 ^^^

1988 to 1992 Ranger with 2.9l and 4x4 had the Mitsubishi FM146

2WD 2.9l had the M5OD-R1 during those years

You can look at the visual differences here: http://www.therangerstation.com/tech_library/ManualTransmission.shtml
Not True! the Mazda M5OD-R1 trans was available from 1988-on

The Mitsubishi transmissions are "more common" behind the 2.9 engine, but remember the Mitsubishi FM146/FM132 was NEVER Made for the 4cyl engine (or for that matter for any engine other than the 2.9), so the Mazdas were out there but Mazda was still ramping up production of this "new" transmission...

I've seen (and pulled) a number of "M" code transmissions in 1988 and 1989 model year vehicles, so don't repeat the false myth that they don't exist...

I actually owned an '88 Bronco2 with a factory installed Mazda transmission.

Not false just not common which is why I included the visual reference link.
