Starter is locking out on my 85' bronco II. Starter has been changed out twice, thinking the bendix was the problem. The ring gear looks great. I thought I might have had the flywheel on backwards,as the exposed side of the ring gear has no bevel, as it turns out, either does the other side. All I can think of is that the fly wheel is bent or there is an imperfection in the ring gear that isn't visible while installed . Any experiences or suggestions out there? Just to make sure I have the flywheel on correctly, what should I see through the inspection plate? For a visual, the flywheel is beveled somewhat like a bell, with the top of the bell fastened to the flywheel. I am thinking it might be hard to put it on incorrectly, but it was so long ago I can't remember the details of installation.

Thanks
JOn

Make sure you have the right bolts holding the starter to the block, or it can torque a little and bind the bendix (ask me how I know). Have you tried using shims yet?

I take it that you dont have the original starter anymore? If you did you could compare the length of the nose. Auto and man starters are different. Is the ring gear getting damaged by the starter? Is there a mark in the bell housing as if the starter is over shooting the ring gear? If there is it would cause the starter to bind on the ring gear.
